Every country but ours...

Cuba has announced radical plans to lay off huge numbers of state employees, to help revive the communist country's struggling economy.

The Cuban labour federation said more than a million workers would lose their jobs - half of them by March next year.

Those laid off will be encouraged to become self-employed or join new private enterprises, on which some of the current restrictions will be eased.

It is biggest shift to the private sector since the revolution in 1959.

Cuba's communist government currently controls almost all aspects of the country's economy and employs about 85% of the workforce.

"Our state cannot and should not continue maintaining companies, productive entities, services and budgeted sectors with bloated payrolls and losses that hurt the economy," the labour federation said in a statement.

"Job options will be increased and broadened with new forms of non-state employment, among them leasing land, co-operatives, and self-employment, absorbing hundreds of thousands of workers in the coming years."
Free enterprise?

The governing Communist Party has indicated that strict rules limiting private enterprise will be relaxed and many more licenses will be issued allowing people to become self-employed.

Existing private businesses will be allowed to employ staff for the first time.
Cuban leader Raul Castro President Raul Castro has said the state's role in the economy must shrink

A minority of Cuban workers already work for themselves, for example as hairdressers and taxi-drivers, or running small family restaurants.

There is also a thriving black economy, with many trades people working independently without proper permission from the state.

President Raul Castro outlined the changes in a speech in August, saying the state's role in the economy had to be reduced.

"We have to end forever the notion that Cuba is the only country in the world where you can live without working," he said.

Cuba's state-run economy has been gripped by a severe crisis in the past two years that has forced it to cut imports.

It has suffered from a fall in the price for its main export, nickel, as well as a decline in tourism.

Growth has also been hampered by the 48-year US trade embargo.

Mr Castro became Cuba's leader when his brother, Fidel Castro, stepped aside because of ill-health in 2006.

Well, who would have thought that they would figure that out in Havana before they figured it out in Washington?

Another great article about the process of decentralizing power in America. This writer calls it "Localism". Good read.

I am just shaking the tree, to see if any liberty loving conservatives are left.
No you're not -you think you are -but you're just kicking up piles of **** that we all know are there... and stinking up the place. We'll get it cleaned up... we just need to acquire the right tools to do the job... cause there is no way in hell we are gonna pick it up with our hands, the way that you are attempting to. All you end up doing is getting **** on you and on me... while leaving the vast majority where it fell.

Preacher keeps getting the right idea, but gets sidetracked by the flashy lights and saber rattling.
I always have the right idea. I am the one that makes the idea... that you presume to understand -vague as your understanding is -of my idea.

The Republicans have had more than enough chances to clean **** up, and failed, miserably. You should be embarrassed for them, after the contract with America fiasco.. they accomplished ****. You guys are stuck on, "When we get back in power", well I have seen them in power, multiple times, and have yet to see them fix a ****ing thing.

Sorry, I don't get a tingle up my leg when I think of November, because Nov will probably bring just more of the same.. like it has for the last 80 years..

Their outrage is as fake as Boehner's tan..

I listen to lots of right wing talkers and agree with most of what they say. However, most of them have nothing but bile for moderate Republicans. Anything that doesn't fit the mold of pure conservatism needs to be washed away in their opinion. I disagree. The reason is that if you are doctrinally pure and lose every election, you cannot begin to advance your agenda. Pure right-wing conservatism is not what the middle of the road voters want or trust. I say it is far better to take a center-right position, win the middle and win some elections. Then the rightward agenda can be advanced. While I can't be sure where Republicans will lead us after their last failure, I'm 100% sure that the Dems will lead us down the road of financial ruin in the name of "fairness". We on the right need to be supporting our moderate candidates instead of standing our ground while hell burns around us.

I have to disagree.. It's too easy for the "guilt trip" card to get played.. "Oh, you want to cut spending, you don't like "children" "poor people" "blacks" "hispanics" "The environment" or insert favorite "cause" here.. By sticking to a true, conservative platform, things can get done socially, without driving the frigging bus over the cliff.. sure, I love children, blacks, hispanics, the environment, etc, etc, etc. But I don't love them enough to be a slave to their needs.. I got my own family with their needs.. help those who need it, and only those who NEED it. Everyone else can get a job.

All this nanny state **** has to end.. there is no way to afford it anymore, and there is no way to afford those social programs that bankrupt all of us.

Doing what you say, is the tried and true method to failure. Now it's time for change we can believe in...
