Differential Valve Vent?

I replaced the my left outer shaft seal which solved most of my differential leaking problem. However, now another very small leak has become apparent between the tranny and the diff (probably another seal). In the trouble shooting section of the service manual it mentions servicing/replacing the differential valve vent as a possible solution to leaks. I can't any reference to this valve any other place in the service manual.

Is there a procedure for this in the service manual? If not, where is this valve and how do I check it?

Thanks.

No procedure for the vent in the Service Manuals that I can find. I am aware of possible vent leaking, as it was the subject of a recall campaign on the '84.

As for location, I believe the small area highlighted in yellow marker is correct:

Check in the immediate area for signs of fluid leakage. Wipe the carrier completely clean and recheck.

Thanks for the quick response and the picture. I know its an odd thing to wish for, but I'm sorta hoping the vent valve is clogged and causing a pressure build up on the seals, thus a leak. I really don't want to have to replace the seal between the transmission and differential due to the amount of work involved.

If I were to check that valve to make sure it isn't clogged, does it just twist out? Or, is there another way to check it?

Uncharted waters for me on that one. Sorry.

Based on the drawing, I'd expect it is held in place by a tight rubber seal (O ring). I'd be inclined to buy a new one before I went to work. Having the new part will reveal how it fits and make for a quick change out. Then clean up the old one at your leisure and save it for the next swap out, should the problem reappear.

If I remember correctly this vent was discussed on the Corvette Forum a week or two ago and the vent pipe was a press type of fit, they said that you have to grab it and twist it to get it out of the rear end.

I guess there is some type of check valve in the vent that can get stuck and will cause the pressure to build up in the rear end causing the seals to leak.

Good luck and let us know how you make out

In some cases the line is pinched closed by falling downward
