 Preach AJ my dad is a mechanic (chevy man) and growing up he use to tell me why do you think the car manufacturers spend millions $ in R&D to develop these cars and some shade mechanic can come up with a better way to make the car run. Haha i only use what GM put in it for the most part. Now there are exceptions (very few) like those damn plastic gears in our headlights, i did your DIY on those sweet brass ones. No more bbbrrrrrrrrrr for me. Great write up aj.
:agree:

There are always small improvements that you can make but massive redesigns are best left to those who's veins flow 10W-40. What a lot of people fail to take into consideration is that every action has a reaction. If you beef up one area of the engine, you must also address all of the other areas that are affected by that additional power. A good engine designer will have thought this out fully on paper first, before spending one dime on the actual upgrade. I had to learn this the hard way and that's the same way a lot of people learn it. You upgrade one thing and blow up something else. By the time you've got it right, you've spent more money than necessary and blown up way more stuff than you should have. That totally sucks and is not anything I will bother experiencing again. Now I buy a proven setup that has been engineered to work together. My stock C5 is that system. If I want more ponies, I'll buy a C6.

Yea, you'll have most of it taken apart at that time! Are you sure it's the oil pan gasket and not the OPS?

im assumeing ops is sometype of sensor.. the leak is comming from the front of the pan where the cover and pan meet , i think its not coming from the top of the engine if anything i thinks it may be the front main seal.. but the amount of work i have to get to that maakes me think if im gonna go that far i mind as well do it all so i dont have to worrie about another leak in the future and go through this crap again... sorry to jack the thread... also whats is ops oil pan senso doesnt make sense and oil pan seals doesnt make sense bacuse you mention the oil pan gasket

It's the Oil Pressure Sensor. Is your oil pressure needle pegged? If so, your OPS is messed up and can leak oil down the back of the engine. It will appear to come from the oil pan as it will be totally covered with oil. The oil pan leaking is NOT common so I'm thinking it may be the OPS.

lol i would have figured that out but i knew th esensor was on the top, i couldnt think of what sensor would be in the pan.. the sensor is bad... but the oil is comeing from the front of the engine

i diddnt feel like doing this job at all, i got a quote to do the job from two garages i trusted they both wanted about 1500 bucks to do this job... thats why ive decided to wait will winter and take my time. atleaset i get to rip into the vette and see whats in there mechanicly. i also picked up 13.5 inch rotors for the front and 13 inch cross drilled rotors for the rear and brackets from a z51 c6 so i get to do that job while i do this and i want to do bump steer tie rod ends while im at it. not to mention what could be worn out thats needs replaceing whtn i get into the job.. its gonna feel like a new car when im done

Just 2 bolts, right ?

AJ, BTW, what is your ETA on performing this non-PITA job on your C5 ? complete with pictures and helpul hints ?? You seem to have become the defacto realtime "Service Manual" !!!

We don't need no stinkin' 3 volume service manual , we got AJ !!!!

The day you see a shotgun shoved in my grill is the day you'll get that DIY. I'm in the garage right now trying to get my light cannons working. It ain't going as planned.

Great Job

Junkman thanks for the info, I have a 99 convertilbe and I'm sure somewhere down the road I will be needing this info. I also like the way you supported your corvette on the jack stands, I'll try that next time I work on my corvette.

First off, welcome to DC! :buhbye:

There are a whole lot more write-ups here that I and others have done. Look around and check the place out. I'm sure you'll find that it is different from other forums that you may have visited.

First, use that snozz between your eyes. If you smell ANY odor that smells like antifreeze, then you have a leak. If so, check the "T" connection at the bottom of the overflow tank (visible from the driver's side of the car, although the tank is on the passenger's side). Also check where the hoses meet the radiator. If you don't smell any antifreeze, pull both the AC and the Accessory belts. Then, attempt to free spin both tensioners and both idlers. If any of them spin (they should immediately stop when you let go), then replace them because they are worn. The last thing to replace is the belts unless you see obvious damage like cracking or the belt is getting very smooth on the ribbed side.

In order to check the water pump for leaks, get a small mirror on a shaft that will allow you to see under the the water pump from the top. Remember, if the water pump is slowly leaking, the drops won't land directly on the ground. They will most likely land on the front leaf spring and travel to one side of the car.

Let me know what you find.

Well alrighty then, i got my check list and will do the smell, spin, look, belt test check tomorrow. Thank you much sir AJ. If pulleys or belts need replaced should i just go to stealerships or do we have a suggested vendor.?

It took me a second to figure this one out i figured you had a hard day bro. "If you small ANY order that smells like antifreeze":D We know you work hard.

"If you small ANY order that smells like antifreeze"

I think he is just using Spanglish which is the required dialect which is taught at "AJ's school of sensitivity training"

Anyone know what the average mileage a C5 water pump lasts?

There are a lot of variables- but in general do the pumps fail at XXXXX miles?

I do not see a whole lot of posts on WP replacements.

I had been working on my headlights for about 19 hours straight when I posted that. I usually proof-read my post before I post them but I think I fell asleep in my chair. :thud:

At least I'm just about done!

With water pumps, I don't think there's any rhyme or reason as to how long they last. At least I haven't seen anything consistent with the C5. Mine went out at 100,000 miles. I say I got my money's worth.
