My off the wall guess is the manufacturer providing thier car would have to have some relationship with Indy IE cash sponsorship. Maybe Chevy didn't think it was important until then. Also the pace car would have to meet certain specs which chevy didn't want to invest in.

but didn't various Bel Airs, Camaros, etc. pace previous to '78?

I wondered if it had to do in the past with not being a four-seater.

In 1955 they used a 55 Chevy Convertible, the 55 pace car had Dual 4 carbs like a 56 Chevy got, it must have been an early proto-type set up. In 67 there was a Camaro and again in 69 it was the Camaro. The Camaros used to pace the race were big block cars although G.M. did sell some special edition pace cars for the street with small blocks. Bob
