Hey fellas,

I'm new to the site and just wanted to make this post. I bought an 02 coupe 6m last Halloween. With all the incentives and 0% financing I couldn't resist. I really wanted a Z06 but no 02's were left. I bought the coupe on that Thursday and took it to the track that Saturday. I was very disappointed in the performance. The car ran a 13.55 @107.5. Well I took the car to the same track this last Sunday. Completely stock except for the zip tie mod. I changed my driving techinique to slipping the clutch out of the hole, power shifted, all gears, and lowered my shift points from 6000 to 5800. The car ran a 12.87 @ 111.98. That run was only the 4th time the car has ever been run at the strip. I backed that run up with a 13.12 @ 112 (Tried launch the car at 2300 sixty foot not good 2.2. Is the common for a stock coupe (zip tie mod only) I think with a set of F1 off a Z06 or a set of Drag Radials and the car might run 12.50's. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Wow!

First off, welcome! We are glad you found us.

And, you are right about rolling out the clutch, that's a great technique. It's tough on the clutch, but allows you to gradually get power to the rear wheels while maintaining traction.

Can you post all the data from the 12.xx and the 13.55 timeslips? There is more to learn, and we can tell from the data.

I know; is this normal for an almost all stock car. I do have a k&n replacement filter ziptied to the stock air box. I know the car only did it once but on the second run it ran a 13.12 @ 111.98 (might as well say 112) the sixty went to 2.2 tried launching harder. Would have tried once more but test and tune was over. I have never seen a stock 6m with runflats run this kind of et or mph. I have been racing for 15 years and go to the track twice a month w/my drag car and th best I've seen a completely bonestock Z06 go is 12.79 @ 113. By no means am I saying C5's or Z06's can't run faster I just have never witnessed it when I am racing. It seems only the magazines can get cars to turn the "12.40 times" Does driving techniques really matter with these cars.
Can you guys imagine if I put a "sticky tire" on the car and can launch at 4000 and it hooks. I figure if I could run a 1.70 sixty at 110 the car might run low 12's what do you guys think?

Yep. I can imagine it, and I can imagine a destroyed clutch, or other broken pieces!

Although bad for ET's, tires spinning is actually a "parts longevity" mechanism. It's better that the excess energy has somewhere to go (wheel spin) instead of having sticky tires and all that energy is trapped in the drive train. Tires are cheaper to replace than a clutch, or drive shaft.

Plus, a small amount of slipage has a "torque converter" effect and will help your MPH.

If you put sticky tires on a stock C5, and launched at 4k... and the tires won't give because they are too sticky... you WILL break something at some point.:(

Hey fellas,

Thanks for all the replies. I will scan the timeslip on the coupe later tonight and a picture of the drag car. My drag car is a 1978 Malibu. This car is and will continue to be a work in progress (I think all gearheads "never complete a car"). I have been driving/racing this car since I was 15. In the course of the last 15 years the car has had 6 different powertrain combinations. This is the current combo

-350 .060 over
-10/10 used GM factory forged Crank
-Eagle 5.7 Rods
-Venolia domed pistons(Don't know the exact compression bought them with the crank at a swap meet)
-Brodix Track 1 heads very mild porting
-You guys will love this one. Chet Herbert Roller Cam. Dad Bought it for me as a birthday/Christmas Gift. He got the cam lifters, and pushrods brand new from Herbert for $329
-Chevy bowtie open plenum manifold
-NOS Big Shot nitrous system
-Nine inch Ford ford with strange race case and strange 33 spline axles
-400 turbo trans with coan 4800 stall converter.
car weighs 3230 with me and 1/4 tank of gas. The car runs consistent 11teens in motor tune with a best 11.13 @ 120. Tried spraying the car with 225 horse shot on 10/4/03 couldn't keep the car straight. Tried twice. First time the car went a 1.31 60' but swerved out of the groove and couldn't recover, had to get out of it. Second time ran a 1.34 60' tried to stay with it but swerved into opponents lane had to shut down. Once I get the suspension figured out for nitrous I THINK the car will dip into the 9's. A huge learning curve went into this combination. It took me two years to get this car (in motor tune) to go from 12.00's to 11teens. What I've found is litte things make the difference (i.e. carb spacer plates, sparkplugs, waterpumps, electric fans, and spools)
I'll scan pictures of both cars and time slips

fastcoupe, being a good pilot makes ALL the difference.

There are several guys, probably at least a half dozen that I know who are running their Z06's in the mid to low 11's with just intake and drag radials. They flat out know how to drive the car. Even though mine is capable of running that fast, I just don't have the technique and would be lucky if I was in the mid to low 12's.

I have seen coupes with intake only run that fast or faster. With perfect driving you will probably see nothing lower than 12.5 on a stock LS1 motor.
