im going to do the exhaust on my car, again and want to run the older exhaust systems vs the ones for this specific year. does anyone know if the 78' and earlier tranny crossmember will work with my manual 80? or if anyone has one or knows where to get one? looked on ebay for only found for automatic. thanks guys.

btw, anyone seen this system, http://www.pypesexhaust.com/newproducts.html . thinking about getting it.

You can make it work, it's not entirely bolt in though. The bolts that go up into the frame are bolt in but the horizontal through bolts are not. The ears on the crossmember need to be cut, bent out and rewelded to be able to get that bolt through.

However WHY would you want to use the earlier crossmember, running the exhaust through the crossmember is a pita and they are very close to the tranny. Why not put a 2nd notch in your existing crossmember? All it takes is welding a little more metal on the top and then cutting the bottom and plating it up. You'll have 3 "walls" which will make it stronger and the height you added on top makes for a little extra strength also.

think it might be better to just plasma out where its gonna hit and re-weld in a piece of steel to fill it in? i think i had seen a post about someone doing that on this site, cany find it though. thanks.

looks great! did you take any before and after pics of the crossmember? what kinda mufflers are ya running? i've had dynomax ultra flow ss on for a few years and a little quiet but nice. looking for something with a bit more rumble.

Nah, don't have a before/after pic...you can see the notch above the dr. side pipe. I also added a section on top of the crossmember. Very easily done if you have a welder.

Those are borla ss mufflers.

This is how it sounds, really doesn't do it jsutice. it's a very deep rumble and a powerful but distinguished sound, not obnoxious like the bullets on my truck.
