On the 91 I really want to detail the engine bay. What's the best way?

Just resist the erge to put armor-all on it. That stuff can make things real messy

Re: Re: Engine detail?

Ragvette,

I spend a good 2-hours cleaning the engine... maybe once every 3 months.

I focus on each individual component and clean it before moving to the next. I use a variety of cleaning products.

When I am done, I use Armor All greaseless "interior" to darken the hoses and whatnot.

To sum up, the only way to have a great engine compartment is to invest the time.

That's pretty much what I do. How great your engine looks is directly related to effort.

I used a brass wire wheel on my drill to clean the Aluminum plenum, A/C lines, alternator and parts of the compressor. Very fast and very effective in areas that you can reach. The brass does not harm the aluminum if you go lightly. Use a brass brush for the tight spots.

I also used Turtle Shell rubber, vinyl & plastic protectant on the hoses and other rubber. It looks great and not sticky.

I dont risk using water on anything under the hood. I'll post a pic so you can take a look. Its not show quality but I dont mind opening up the hood whenever....

Well, I can't post a pic on this thread, or at least I don't know how. So I posted in the Gallery at "Engines, mods and parts up close". BY the way, the paint on the injector covers and air filter cover etc., is just an off the shelf automotive spray can. It takes to the covers very nicely and only needs two coats.

Good luck!

thanks for the comments guys
the intake didn't come out quite like I wanted it to. I was too lazy to go to the hardware store for sanding discs (for the die grinder) so I just used what I had and did it by hand. good enough for now I guess.

As you can see from the pic my intake was a little rusty and pitted so I actually started with sandpaper (by hand). I used 150 grit, then 400, 800?, 1000 and last 2000.
The 1000 was a wet sand. When I was done I just used Mother's Aluminum polish with a soft cloth.
The sandpaper grits don't matter so much, the idea is just to start with a low # and work your way up using several steps.
I've done this before and that seems to work well.
