I spend a good 2-hours cleaning the engine... maybe once every 3 months.
I focus on each individual component and clean it before moving to the next. I use a variety of cleaning products.
When I am done, I use Armor All greaseless "interior" to darken the hoses and whatnot.
To sum up, the only way to have a great engine compartment is to invest the time.
