I have a 91 vette. and some times the car wont start when I put the key in. I wait a few minutes and it starts. i think its the key but I'm not sure. I read in the manual that this can happen to corvetts. I have 78k miles. Is it time to get a new key or is it possible that the ignition is bad and needs to be changed. Sometimes the car will go days without having the problem and some days it does it all day.

I had the same problem. Turned out I need to bypass VATS. Most likely the little prongs that grab the sides of the chip on the ignition key were no longer grabbing.

So, it's like starting a car with an invalid key, it kills the starter. No click, no nothing... hafta wait 5 minutes before restarting.

I dont have the spare key. I wish I did. How would I go about trying to bypass the VATS? That sounds like the best solution.
