Executive Confirmation

I just read that Lutz has confirmed not only the existence of the SS, but has also acknowledged that it is in the final stages of refining and tuning. He said this after a very hotly protested announcement that GM's rwd flatforms are being put on hold in response to the new emissions challenges enacted by President Bush.

"Lutz won’t divulge engine details except to say the displacement of the new powertrain is greater than the pushrod 7.0-liter V-8 in the Z06."

454 DOHC LSX? mmmmmmmm
I think there's a possibility of a push-rod 496cu engine. Just take the Vortec 8100 out of the trucks, put in different heads, cam, lighter rotational assembly, and call it done. Ditching push-rods seems to be a foolhardy move, since they have no problem supporting higher lifts and durations than have been used up to now, and GM is very well versed at building push-rod V8s.
