Justice Department puts political correctness over safety

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.’s obsession with racial grievance-mongering could get Americans burnt to a

crisp in their own homes. That’s because his Justice Department is trying to force the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) to hire flunkies who got 70 percent wrong on a basic, fire-related multiple-choice, open-book test.

The exam was used to screen applicants to the fire academy. More than 90 percent of black and Hispanic test-takers passed, which isn’t enough for liberals addicted to affirmative action. At Justice’s urging, federal district Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis threw out FDNY’s test results - blocking admittance to all successful blacks and Hispanics - and ordered a complicated process to admit more minorities.

On Feb. 28, Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, submitted a proposed order for damages for rejected applicants who scored 25 or higher on the 85-question exams. New York’s taxpayers would be forced to pay compensation to the flunkies to make up for years of seniority supposedly lost when the city chose not to hire them. Minority rejects also would receive seniority over firemen who had been working all the while.

Highlighting the unreasonableness of this scandal is how low the threshold was. On one exam, the first 11 questions - related to a picture of a fire scene - asked how many firefighters were on hand, the number of fire hydrants in view, what the street address was and what floor had a person standing in the window.

The Justice Department’s race-based advocacy flies in the face of a high-profile 2009 case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Connecticut locality could not discard results from an objective firefighter test merely because of a racially disparate passage rate. The Justice Department is trying to force the Big Apple to do exactly that.

FDNY is a justly proud organization which lost 343 heroic firemen saving lives during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. By promoting race over ability, the Justice Department is undermining the fire department’s ability to do its job, which puts lives in danger.

Seriously, they failed an OPEN BOOK(i.e. the BOOK with the answers) MULTIPLE CHOICE exam?

And that moron want to put these mentally handicapped individuals in charge of hoses with 100 psi, Air Paks(I know FDNY uses Scott:thumbsup:) with 4,500 psi of air pressure and 50,000lb fire trucks. Not to mention an axe. Sounds like a perfect way to kill perfectly competent fire fighters.

they simply know they are in trouble and will do anything and everything for every last vote they can get....

In that case I am going to sue for damages from the medical school I didn't get into (because I didn't apply because I didn't meet the prereqs) hahaha....I think that the last 14 years of my life are worth about, oh lets throw a random number out, say around $50 million.

Sounds like the Chicago fire exam in 1985. Hardly no minorities past the written exam so they tossed it and based the whole entrance exam on the physical/ algility test. What a f n joke.

N.Y.C. spent millions trying to recruit minorities into the F.D.N.Y.and it looks like there about to try it again.(one method was to make early morning phone calls to applicants reminding them to show up for the test!!)Meanwhile my former marine stepson who recorded a perfect score(along with many others of all races) are "shut out"

If only it were that simple, they would likely drag some veterans and quality rookies down with them. Fire doesn't have racial quotas, it burns us all the same.

As a 38-year professional firefighter, I can only tell you that working alongside these hires is no picnic either. It happens everywhere, being forced to hire substandard employees over extremely competent, capable and willing applicants with superior test scores. Don't the city taxpayers deserve the best? I guess not.

Whenever the standards are lowered to include the groups the liberals force us to hire, there are no standards.

Sorry, that's the truth. You have no idea HOW sorry - and one of the reasons I encouraged all three of my sons to follow different career paths than their father and grandfather. They wouldn't have had a chance.

This is nothing new for NYC, they have a long history of manipulating the civil service test scores with some conveluted curve to hire and promote minorities who would otherwise be left out in the cold. They have promoted individuals to supervisory positions who have scored 30% on promotional exams..... all to my male the ACLU and NYCLU happy.

This I truely do agree with you on....It is the same thing in the military. I had a soldier several years ago who failed out of several different MOS schools before he passed one. he was hispanic and his spanish was so terrible the other hispanics couldnt always understand him. Yet another reason I will never be a recruiter.
