What are some of the good (impartial sites) for reviews? I've seen a few and question whether they are reviews or slanted promotional stuff. Some want you to pay for the reports.

I know Valentine V1's are great, and Escort 8500's (I've had one). But what is good in the $200-300 range? I'm tired of paying big bucks for electronics.

Some real good reviews in our product review section on the Valentine

I should actually add my comments because I used a Valentine from MD to GA and back, excellent performance. It has us looking hard to find the hidden patrolmen (different lanes, on an overpass). I just never bought one because I rarely get to drive a C5 Z06.

You can get a used V1 on Ebay in that price range.

Be careful buying a v12 on ebay. Get the serial number and go on valentine's website. They will let you know how outdated the software is. If it is very old it may not be worth it. I have owned at least 4 Valentine one's over the last 15 years and would never use another radar detector ever!! to put is simply it has kept me out of Jail!! Patrick if you are willing to spend 300 just pony up the difference and get the V1 the savings might be your first Ticket!! Just my 2cents!

:agree: The V1 is only $100 more and well worth the investment.

I hear you Patrick, but after buying the V1 it has saved my ass so many times from radar traps I couldn't even see. It goes off before my buddies detectors. You can tune out all the X band crap blips so you only get true bill stuff. I'll never go cheaper. One ticket with a cheaper system and I'd feel like as *ssmonkey after saving $100-200 bucks.

That's why my brother returned his after 2 weeks. Way too many false alarms here in our area.

I haven't run radar in 4 years. But, I figure on those long stretches of desert... might keep me from getting snagged.

I generally find radar detectors annoying and distracting. But, considering I'll be on the road for 8000 miles in the next 5 weeks, I'd like to preserve my drivers license. :D

The difference between a false signal and the real thing is obvious, the V1 has a signal strength meter, false alarms might show 1 dot, the real threats light the meter up. To eliminate the annoying beeps, I just turn the volume all the way down.

Hey Patrick, don't forget the remote display!

Route planned?

I'll come up with something after watching the weather channel on Wednesday morning. After we scoop up IBURKE in Missouri there are a multitude of ways we can go, but weather is the deciding factor on exactly how far south we are going to go before swinging west.

If I had to throw some guess out, day #1 ends in somewhere in Oklahoma... Tulsa or something a little west of it. That'd probably be a good place to crash.

Day #2 is when the incredible scenery begins, and we'll get to watch it all day. Same on day #3.

My thought is this:

50% of the trip on day 1.
25% the trip on day 2.
25% the trip on day 3.

This way when we get to the amazing country, we can stop (hoover dam, grand canyon) and hang out and take some great Corvette photos without feeling rushed. We'll have plenty of time to check things out.

Patrick,
I am partial to the Valentine. I like the way it shows which direction the bogey is coming from and how many. Out West they frequently work in pairs. You pass one and cannot assume there is not another waiting just a little ahead. Watch for freeway underpasses and onramps, they love to hide.

Have a fun trip out to Nevada.

I will be at Spring Mountain from Thursday morning on, so phone me if anything comes up.

Valentine detectors are an overhyped product much like Bose is.
They perform well enough, but not any better than Escort or Bel.
Valentine markets to the image based consumer.
All of the Bel detectors tested equal to each other and the competition.

I have a V1 and the extra hundred that you spend now could save you thousands on fines and insurance rates later. You can switch the V1 to Logic or Advanced Logic modes to help filter out the falses, but after you have had one for a while you learn to tune out the small stuff and you pretty much know when you have a possible real threat.

I feel naked when I don't have mine in the car now. :thud: You won't regret purchasing one if you really have a lead foot like I do.
