On the way home today, as I was entering the interstate, I cruise up to about 4,500 rpm in 3rd just to stretch the legs a little. In doing so, I notice I have gotten the attention of a sleek black car coming up fast in my rear view mirror. My car is pretty loud so I was hard to miss.

Looking in my mirror I notice it’s a Mercedes SL model. At time I didn't know if it was a SL500 or SL55 AMG, but I knew I was about to find out. He cut through some cars to get to me. We slowly make our way around a few cars and what do you know, but open interstate as far as the eye can see.

I'm in 3rd at about 4,500 rpm and stand on it, he's behind me, but I'm slowly pulling away. Into 4th and about midway through 4th I'm about 6 cars ahead. A toll is coming up and I'm already going fast enough, so I get on the brakes a bit. He catches up to me and pulls along side and he’s grinning from ear to ear and kind of laughing, shaking his head, and gave me a good waive and thumbs up. I return the waive and thumbs up and let him in front after the 3 lane toll.

As he gets in front of me, there it is, SL55 AMG! My excitement increases. Again, no traffic and I knew he was going to launch. So, I'm in my sweet spot of 3rd and there he goes. I'm glued to him in all the way through 3rd and making some slow progress. At the top of 3rd (6,800 rpm), I pull in the lane next to him and shift into 4th. At this point I start to cruise past him and can see he's laughing like me and having a great time. Into 5th and I'm about 7 cars out. I let off and slow down. I rolled down my window and give a good thumbs up and waive and he does the same.

It was a great run with a really cool guy with a beautiful and powerful car. What a day!!!

probally a gallardo, murcialago, f430, gt500, charger srt8 (not by much), evo IX from a launch, tie from a roll. not much tho.

with our cars the opposition needs to spend about 100k to tie a C5 and 125k to tie a C6. close to 150 to beat both. with the C6 Z06 250K to match its performance

Sounds like it was a lot of fun...

Good job on keeping it safe...

I agree with all of the others, the Corvette is by far the best performance for the money!!!

There are somewhat odd things like Turbo Buicks you can pick up for about $8k, put way less than 10K$ into and run low 11s or faster at the track. These are cool because they're definitely a sleeper, and can still be vaguely legal and streetable, back seat and all. I know one guy who builds ultra-turbo Hondas that will beat stock C5s (by a lot) at the track for around $20k total. They must be terrifying to drive though, require race fuel, not exactly "legal", or reliable . . . but hey, squeezing 500HP out of 1.8L comes at a price

Stock to stock. dollar for dollar from the factory (the only real measure) not much compares to a Vette in the total picture. In Europe, it's a little different with things like TVR (roughly similar European price points), and over the years there have been JDMs that were pretty impressive. Nevertheless, the SBC is probably the best platform in the world for making truly affordable monster, yet reliable power.
