A few months ago I posted a caution about working around HEI ignitions, specifically using a soldering gun with the key on. I finally got a little video done. BE careful. If the key is on, and you reach over the dizzy with a soldering gun, the HEI WILL fire. If a cylinder is ready to fire it could cause the engine to turn over. If you're in a position that could catch you or clothing in the belts, you could get hurt.

The Video:

Almost forgot-- Thanks to Kevin (kwplot34) -- his dizzy!!:D

Yep, I'm that old. Went to work at a Chevy dealer in 1972. I suspect that GM used those State Trooper cars for some "just before release" type testing.. I bet they used taxicabs too.

The first Hei were in general production Oldsmobiles in 1974. In 1975 they were in the complete GM line.

Back then Olds cars got the inovative stuff first, supposedly to test for Cadillac and then the rest of GM.

That reminds me of how we would "charge" up an ignition condenser and wait for someone to pick it up so we could see them jump when they touched it:rolling: :rolling: :rolling: Peace,,,Moosie :buhbye:

OH Cripe, we used to do that to newbie TV techs....charge up a 400 volt 40 mfd cap, bend the ends around, and toss it to him.....

I even took an old speaker magnet, and stuck it up top of the Mu metal sheilding on an older color TV, this ex NASA tech was doing fill in work on his way to Navy department....well anyway, he tried to do something called 'pulling purity' on that new CRT install....had this blob of colors up top and he couldn't figger out WHY.....I let it bug him for a while, then pulled the magnet out when he walked off disgusted to get coffee.....

he came back and it was gone....

we finally told him about it....

oh, the crap we used to do to each other....

   :spanked: :WTF  :rolling:

It's the large magnetic field caused by the high current draw of the soldering iron. The Magnetic pick up in the HEI is triggered by it. A running pulg in power drill, or any high curret power tool will probably do the same thing. For those who don't know, an laymans explanation,, is all. C.
