HELP!!! transmission pops out of reverse

my 01 Z06 will stay in reverse as long as I hold the shifter there (its a six speed), but as soon as I let go, it will pop out. anyone knows what this means? Any info will be appreciated.

I don't know what it is, but mine feels like it is barely in reverse sometimes. It has never popped out, but I usually hold it there 'cause it feels like it going to. Once in a while I let the clutch out and it isn't in reverse...it really pisses me off, I hate hearing the grinding noise of gears and knowing what it does to them! I am removing mine this winter and shipping it off to RS Gear to have them go through it 'cause I still have a problem w/ my 2nd gear synchro.:(

You have 2 options of what might be causing the condition.
First, possibly the shifter would need to be adjusted.
Second, the reverse syncronizer has worn teeth and will need to be replaced.
As long as you are not experiencing any shifting problems in any other gear, these are your 2 possibilities.

thank you for the replys. I have a feeling it might be the shifter because it feels like revese is just barley in there whenever I use it. How do I adjust the shifter so that I can can the reverse gear to set in there where it needs to go? This is my first vette and, if you can't already tell, I have a lot to learn about these wonderful machines.

Remove the center console, and the radio bezel.
Then, remove the 4 10mm nuts holding the rubber boot over the shifter.
Once the shifter is exposed, you will see a pin at the front of the housing.
When in neutral, this pin should drop right into the hole.
If it does NOT, you will need to adjust the shifter.
Loosen the 3 Torx fasteners, 2 on the shifter itself, and the 1 on the shifter rod at the rear.
Position the shifter so that the pin drops into the hole when you press it down. Then retorque the 3 Torx to 30 ft lbs.
Pull the pin back up to the top, and check your shifter function.

I had an old Ford Futura that did that as it was nearing the end of its short life span. It turned out the synchro was bad.

A synchro's inner hub and sleeve are made of steel, but the blocking ring -- the part of the synchro that rubs on the gear to change its speed -- is usually made of a softer material, such as brass. The blocking ring has teeth that match the teeth on the dog clutch. Most synchros perform double duty -- they push the synchro in one direction and lock one gear to the mainshaft. Push the synchro the other way and it disengages from the first gear, passes through a neutral position, and engages a gear on the other side.


The Futura is returning in 2006, the concept had a 427

Yep, but it was the Ford Fairmont Futura....let me see if I can find a picture

All of them have bad synchros??? Cmon..
