i recently purchased an 88 convertible from my brother...having never owned a vette before i am finding out they are challenging to work on to say the least.. i do have a basic ?.... how do u tell which suspension is on there... z51 is identified in what way? mine is under construction, new steering rack is the current chore, but i need shocks(why i asked) and the rear mono leaf is cracked. is that a common problem? any input is appreciated thanks chad:crazy:

Congrats and welcome aboard.
Z51 is listed with the other options, if you have it. The RPO sticker should be on the back of center console lid or storage compartment lid.
I wouldn't call a cracked spring common, but it does happen. New ones are being made and there are lots of used ones out there.

I'd go with a NEW mono leaf, really, it's like buying used brake pads.

The Z51 was limited to coupes with manual transmissions in 1988. If you look at the center console door, you should find a "Service Parts Identification" sticker, and that lists all the RPO codes associated with your car. If the console door has been replaced, you can order the duplicate window sticker for your car from the National Corvette Museum (all they need is your VIN).

I just replaced my stock Bilstein shocks with a set of Bilstein Sport shocks. The Sport shocks are the ones that came with the Z51 package, and they made a big difference in how the car feels. The standard Bilstein shock for the Vette is called Heavy Duty. I'm not sure if Sports are available for '88 verts - you'll have to look at the Bilstein application guide to find out.

Where did the leaf spring crack? Any other damage that might have contributed to the failure? If you get caustic cleaning agents on the spring, it will deteriorate (but I'm not sure that caustic by itself will cause it to crack).

turns out the lid says z52..... and as for leaf its has flakes on the bend radious on pass side. its just peeling apart in the apex of the spring. not sure about other problems yet. i know all four shocks have leaked untill they have nothing left it appears. i'll be tackling this issue once i get motor compartment reassembled thanks for info and support.
