Finally Puled Motor....what A Pain.!......now Trying To Decide Wheter To Rebuild Bottom EndGet A Prebalanced Kit. Summit Have
Them For Around $600. But I Would Like To Try Someone Else
For A Change.....any suggestions As To Who may Match Their Price.

There where both 2 and 4 bolt main bearings in 72.You can find out by reading your block casting number ore the engine id,here is a pic of where they are on the engine:

Think if the engine numbers on the drivers side just below the firewall have 01 it is a 4 bolt main. :thumbsup:

Get the casting number at the rear of the drivers block and go HERE Most of the numbers state 2 or 4 so you may not know until you pull the pan.

i didn't know there was a reliable way to tell from the outside

I went to the parts house for a part for the 79 and he looked at the numbers there and said I had a 4 bolt main because the number 01 in the series defines it as such. :huh:

not too many "01's" in that list.

I am sure I am wrong but for some reason I was thinking all corvettes were 4 bolt up until around the mid C3 production run.

.....the corvette Black Book for 72 shows this:

Block: 3970010:350 ci, 200hp, 255 hp....

and, 3970014: 350 ci,200 hp, 255 hp

Drop the pan...best way to make sure re 2 or 4 bolt...

In the vin,the fifth digit varies as follows: K=350ci,200hp...L=350ci,255 hp...

The 81 has a 2 bolt main. If you have the motor out, why not just look and know?

My BB number is listed as 2 or 4 bolt on Mortec. I pulled the pan and found a 4 bolt.

Ya might try Jeg's. Unless that is a NCRS Corvette, check with you local chevy dealer. I can get a crate motor here, delivered for under 2 grand.

Okay...that's what I though for big block...just wasn't sure about the mouse motor.

Some really nice bare block 4-bolt main blocks can be had for a pretty reasonable price. Maybe even with splayed main cap bolts. Not sure about that on a mouse, though.
