Get the casting number at the rear of the drivers block and go HERE Most of the numbers state 2 or 4 so you may not know until you pull the pan. ;)
i didn't know there was a reliable way to tell from the outside

I went to the parts house for a part for the 79 and he looked at the numbers there and said I had a 4 bolt main because the number 01 in the series defines it as such.

from Mortec...... 14010201...305...80-85...2

10199001...350...93-95...4...LT-5, ZR1 Vette, 405hp

not too many "01's" in that list.

.....the corvette Black Book for 72 shows this:

Block: 3970010:350 ci, 200hp, 255 hp....

and, 3970014: 350 ci,200 hp, 255 hp

Drop the pan...best way to make sure re 2 or 4 bolt...

In the vin,the fifth digit varies as follows: K=350ci,200hp...L=350ci,255 hp...

So can the same part number for a block be BOTH 4-bolt or 2-bolt???

Aparantly.

My BB number is listed as 2 or 4 bolt on Mortec. I pulled the pan and found a 4 bolt.:D

from the chevymania site the "010" block everyone is after, #3970010 can be both a 2 bolt and a 4 bolt, car or truck from 1969-1979

Okay...that's what I though for big block...just wasn't sure about the mouse motor.

Some really nice bare block 4-bolt main blocks can be had for a pretty reasonable price. Maybe even with splayed main cap bolts. Not sure about that on a mouse, though.
