Did he really think he could get away with this?

Explosion report backfires for tired refinery worker

By Joe Hosey
staff writer

CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP — Instead of calling off of work, a tired, apparently overworked ExxonMobil worker called the law and claimed the plant had blown up, police said.

Lacey Richards, 33, of 507 Florence Ave. was arrested on a felony charge of making a false fire alarm call. He remains in the county jail.

Richards, a forklift driver, was working a 12-hour shift and was "getting tired," according to police. He apparently was so weary, he decided to call 911 on his cellular telephone and tell them there was an explosion at the plant, said Pat Barry, spokesman for the sheriff's department.

Unfortunately for Richards, the dispatchers traced his cell phone number, called the plant and discovered he was scheduled to be working at the plant that supposedly had blown up. Dispatchers also learned the plant did not seem to have exploded.

Richards was snatched up and questioned by detectives, police said, and admitted he called in the phony explosion in hopes of going home early.

Richards did get to leave work but had still had not reached his home, as he remained in custody late Thursday.
