"fair wage"

To do WHAT..... "Fair " wage is what someone will pay YOU to do your job.

You may think Airline pilots make too much money, I bet if you ask the passengers Capt Sullenberger needs a raise!

Bugs

PS Point ME to any story where a major union disavowed the conduct of SEIU and the Chicago THUGGERY

Minimum is just that. The wage afforded by the creation of a job that requires little to no previous skill set... and little to no skill set for the continuation of the job... as the job is easily filled by another of the same skill.

10 -20K -yearly.

30 -40K yearly(un-taxed -as in no taxes paid)... should be the max pay for any and all state and federal employees... with a retirement of the same plus medical dental... etc., provided by the VA. Match our military pay and benefits. THIS... is what civil service was meant to be.

Minimum wage is fine where it is. It should be adjusted upwards if and only if inflation outpaces normal conditions and decreases the purchasing power of every individual. Raising the min wage now will result in less job creation, which is precarious when the real unemployment rate is estimated at 17%-18%.

Minumum wage means the worker is bringing minimum skills to the table.

I don't think wages are the problem.. you can't pay a guy $20k a year to work at McDonalds taking drive-through orders.

What's needed is quality manufacturing jobs. Between the corps and the unions, those are few and far between in the US now.

THe question was minimum , I think....

Go here to look @ military pay charts http://militarypayscale.org/2011-military-pay/ TI "cap" at such small salaries would result in a HUGE brain drain. Playing with the coolest toys will only carry so far...

Bugs
Looking at the charts our military hires off the street at a rate of about $8.50 an hr. (that on a 40 hr week. I spent 12 years in the service, and very few not including combat troops do more than that) Then if you have dependants you get extra pay for that, plus full medical benefits, moving expenses, and other special pays. putting even our lowest paid military person well above the 20K mark. Name ne one business or Corporation that does that. Remember we are talking off the street, no training, and no skills.

Do I think this is a fair pay level for the expertise it takes to protect are country to day... NO

Do you really feel the minimum wage has any thing to do with the unemployment rate today... These people are not entry level positions that the unemployment rate is taken on.

We are talking about what it take to reasonable be able to support a single person or small family?

If Obama get his bill pushed threw you will have your way. Mandatory 2 years public service at military pay level, for every one between the ages of 18 and 42. A lot of you out there may get a chance to find out if public servants are paid too much...:D

I see you just skated past that unpleasantly, But what about your children?

I have a question or two

If only the government and unions make employers pay more than pennies a week for labor(pick you number per unit of time I'm not arguing the specific min) then how am I making $50,000 a year at a non union company in a non union industry in a right to work state?

I should be making $15,000 if corperations will only pay the absolute minimum they can legally get away with, how did this happen?

There is a difference between fair wage and minimum wage. Which are we talking about here?

Also where? In NYC 20k$ is poverty, in the middle of nowhere, 20k$ is living like a king.

All honesty brother... I believe in all male citizens serving two years military... regardless. We would have far less crime and more youth taking interest in this country's best interest... and stop depending on mama and da-da so much. Obama's plan is a farce... with it's ultimate goal to brainwash our youth to achieve a socialist democracy... with heavy dependence upon the government to provide a living.

Wages are based on a persons abilities experience formal education level and leadership ability. For example I work at Texas Instruments and they really do base wage on education attendance work ethic etc. There are small groups of those who complain about their wage always wanting more except when it comes time to take on more duties or increase education via formal schooling or on the job training its all "nah i don't want to do that". How could someone expect to make more when not becoming more valuable as an employee? I have only been there since May and have been put in charge of some who have been there years and I started at the bottom since its a career change for me. So my response to all the minimum wage earners is step up your own skill set or keep earning minimum.

I agree with you 100%. In all the union jobs I have held. All have required a technical knowledge test before you could enter the job. And advanced classes that had to be completed to keep the job. Unions are not just get in the door and sail to top wages like every one thinks they are.

I'll agree with that sentiment, also. -Although I believe too much emphasis is put on education... and not enough on ambition.

Here is a different way of looking at minimum wage that was told by Milton Friedman.

Minimum wage outlaws you from hiring people who's time is worth less than what minimum wage is.

If I were a employee with very low skills, suppose I just got out of prison and or I did not know how to read or write and I wanted to get a job, if all employers were required to pay some wage (pretend it's $14/hr) then it would be nearly impossible for me to get a job, who can pay $14/hr to a guy who can't read?

Now of course there are few people in this world who are unfit to do the lowest jobs like digging ditches or stocking shelves so this alone is not the best examples but there is also a lot of easy jobs that cannot exist because of minimum wage like boiler watching, seat warming or being a sentry, I would love a job making $3/hr to sit around on my ass, study and do very light work but that is illegal.

Also if no minimum wage existed then wages would not fall by much, Most of you I'm sure are making well above the minimum wage without the government mandating your pay. A employer has a trade-off between the quality of workers and how much they cost, your make what you do because you are worth that much. it would not be possible for all the companies in the world simultaneously dropped wages to $1-2/hr as then it would be more economical for most folks to just go back 200 years, find a piece of land and be self sufficient.

I did not vote in your poll, I think minimum wage should be abolished.

my point exactly... And at that point The people would not need, and could not afford the companies products. And the companies know this. So the wage thing is not the bad guys against the good guys. Because the winner is always blamed for the problems and if they were the good guys yesterday the are the bad guys today.

The unions just happen to be good at what they were organized for. And the people that are not on their side are jealous, so they make them out to be the bad guys. Most people will never admit the chose the wrong side, they just try to put the blame else where.
