I think I may have a 400 block in my mud truck. Other than being no freeze plugs on the side what else is their to look for?

The freeze plugs won't necesarily tell you . The 509 400 blocks have the same number and placement of freeze plugs. Probably better to go by engine codes. The three that I'm aware of are 509, 511 and 817.

another easy way to check is to see if you have an external balanced damper and flywheel (IF you know for a fact that your engine is not a stroker)

Post some casting numbers and I'll see if I can look it up for you.

...no freeze plugs on the side...
Huh? I thought Chevy 400's had either the same amount of plugs or have one more per side?

I don't spose you have a head off?
