Your friend's story makes no sense. I've never heard of a group health plan that excludes auto accidents.
In most cases, medical coverage from the auto policy is primary to individual or group health insurance. Once the auto policy limits are met, your health insurance would then kick in.
If a health provider paid medical bills while there was still auto medical available, the health provider would be due reimbursement for their payments. (This is what I think your friend is talking about.)
