The automotive industry, and in the USA especially, has something of a blunt topped pyramid-shaped arrangement of executives. There are very few at the top who wield or once wielded very significant power in multiple Automotive organizations. Bob Lutz is one of those people. He served as an exec of ALL of the Detroit Big Three:
  • Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company
  • President and then Vice Chairman of Chrysler Corporation
  • Vice Chairman of General Motors.
But he's retired now, right? He still goes to the same dinners and parties as those still sweating the grind daily and few are respected as much as Lutz.

Lutz was one of the earliest confirmations of Corvette rear-mid engine production.

Now, according to Road and Track, Lutz has stated, "...the goal is to sell the C8, version for version, at a little more than the C7. The superfast variants will come out two to three years later and cost more than $100,000, just like today’s phenomenal ZR1. The goal, as always with Corvette, is to equal or beat exotics costing many times more. It will be the best value on the planet.”

In the face of many doubters, I have repeatedly made the case that from a pure cost standpoint, there is no justification for a rear mid-engine car to cost significantly more than a similar front engine/rear drive car - especially from today's Corvette. I have presented Actual pricing and production/sales information showing that a $100k base price cannot sell enough units to keep Bowling Green open. GM is closing passenger car plants to tool up more SUV plants demonstrating that GM is more responsive to market dynamics than the old "If we build it, they will buy it" failed philosophy.

GM shareholders would bring a class action lawsuit against the Board of Directors if $750Million was spent on a factory for a business model that REDUCED units produced and Gross Profit.

Set all of my arguments aside and reread Bob Lutz's quotes...and smile my friends. If you can afford a C7, you will be able to afford a C8. If you can afford a 3-4 year old C7 you will be able to afford a 3-4 year old C8. SMILE!

If we smile then we will buy it and if we buy it GM smiles and keeps building Vettes. Nice little circle there

Maybe. For me, I have to see it and drive it first. At this point, I'm more concerned about the storage space than the price or even the looks. There is so little cammo now, there is not much to screw up, I think. I don't expect it to haul cement blocks or anything, but my C6 sure has spoiled me for practicality. I even stored my Dad's wheel chair back there for Dr. vists. He loved riding in the vette. I'm certainly willing to downsize utility somewhat, but NOT do without it alltogether...like most 4xx Ferraris.

Most of those who drive their exotics across Europe usually DHL their luggage ahead of them to their next stop because of the limited space in the car. I don't see most Corvette owners willing to make that expenditure/concession. That said, if as "calculated" the dimensions are all as close to a mid-engine Ferrari as they say, how can the C8 have any better Utility space?

My first Vette was a '76 flat rear deck/flying buttress. I had to install a removable rack to accommodate my then-girlfriend's luggage for any trip. Groceries had to be placed in the passenger seat and footwell. My '79 had the large rear window fastback and that was a MUCH more practical sports car. No hatch, but the seats folded flat (pass) and no outside rack was needed.
