Manual, auto-stick, DSG??

I was wondering if the ZO7, SS, etc. will be offered in something other than regular manual transmission. I currently have an 07 SLK 55 AMG and am very happy with the 7 speed auto box and paddle shifters. I thik that the American muscle cars are behind the times with the manuals...while European and Jap cars will all be moving (if not already) to a dual sequentail gearshift or paddle shifters. I am not knocking those who love manual gearbox....but this transmission would be the reason why I avoid buying this vehicle.

Right now...I'd have to say I agree with you 100% but GM has not shown an interest yet in DSG ...

The one hope is that Porsches new release of the dual clutch setup might get such media acclaim that it will motivate GM to use a transmission with similiar technology.

The added benefit of better, more consistant performance will be a bonus....as the DSG allows better gas mileage and more important these days better emissions testing results.

Please don't mix the old-tech torque-converter-based Mercedes 7 speed slushbox with the DSG and other similar advanced transmissions. :spanked:
If you want a similar automatic there is one in the C6, has 6 speeds and paddle shifting. To me having 7 speeds is irrelevant. Lexus will come with a 8 speed, just to show that they are incapable of innovation. Adding gears is very easy, implementing a DSG-like transmission is not.

By the way, the base C6 is faster than the expensive SLK55 AMG. The Corvette is lighter and more powerful.

I don't expect GM to come with a DSG equivalent for the Z07/SS. Too much money for such implementation. But I wish they would...

Biturbo,
Great points about the Merc 7 speed as compared with GM's new 6 speed.

I know the HP & weight numbers are in the base C6's favor, but under most conditions, the SLK AMG will spank a base C6. In my experience, German horses just tend to be more spunky than American horses. Don't ask me why, it's just what I've found over the years.

Now, the new 6.2L in the '08 Vette may change that situation.

That's an "urban myth". It used to be that the handling in the German cars was much better so it created this myth, but not anymore.
Actually the German horses (DIN) are by definition smaller than the American horses (SAE), no joking.

C6 is really faster than SLK55 AMG, here are results from tests done by manufacturers/ car magazines/ TV shows:

Track_________ _Corvette C6 __ SLK 55 AMG
Nordschleife ____ 8:15 _________ 8:24
Hockenheim short 1:14.8 _______ 1:17.1
Vairano ________ 1:21.2 _______ 1:23.8

Biturbo,

A few months ago, I made the same assertation about German vs. American horses & another forum member shot me down with magazine/car show statistics. Turned out the other forum member was 17 years old & his dad owned a Vette that the boy had driven only under his father's strict supervision. Basically, I was arguing with someone whose driving/automotive experience came from reading Road & Track.

I've owned a bunch of American, German, and Japanese sports cars over the last 23 years. Many of my friends are auto enthusiasts, so I have experience in their vehicles, as well.

Bottom line is when a base C6 driver gets spanked by an SLK AMG, he can always pull out his issue of R&T or the manufacturer's HP/weight numbers. If that makes the Vette owner feel better, I'm not offended & the SLK owner can have a good laugh.

I tend to believe this result C6 > SLK55 because ALL the tests showed the C6 faster and by a significant margin. Yes, a bad driver can loose in the C6, but equal drivers would always lead to C6 turning a faster lap.

I had only German cars before. I still have an Audi S4. I researched the SLK55 AMG because I was thinking to buy it. My main criteria was the performance. The C6 Z06 won over the competition, it was a very obvious decision to me.

Does anyone remember the original question!?!?!?!?

Anyone with half a brain knows the C6 is faster than the SLK 55 AMG-less hp/ less tq, more weight, less tire, and track results. Lets move on and answer the question, and stop this pissing match.
I guess I'll jump back in here...my o0 SLK 55AMG gets so many looks, I don;t care if the C^ is faster. The AMG looks like a true exotic and the interior (with addition of carbon trim with the performance package) is absolutely beautiful. Last week, I had the car hand washed and the guy checking me in asked if it costs me $170,000...I had to laugh and say, [email protected] 80K with all options. No one can compare the C6 to the SLK 55 in terms of flat out class, style, luxury.

You'll hear no arguements from me on that point. I mistakenly thought we were talking about the LS2 C6 vs SLK AMG.

Yes, I'd take a Z over an SLK AMG any day, regardless of the transmission situation!
I hate american cars. There handling does usually suck. In exception of course to the corvette, which in my opinion has european or better handling, saleen s7, mosler, or ford gt. The viper does handle worth a crap and ive driven one at very high speeds, and i mean an 06'. They might as well make the viper awd.

...don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm curious as to what conditions you are referring to...I have a C5 Z06 which is stock and therefore pretty close in performance to a base C6, and have had occasion to run both from a stop and a roll an SLK 55 AMG and easily outran the Merc. Maybe in the rain or snow?:D
This thread is going into different directions, but they are both good ones. I am comparing the base C6 to the SLK AMG...not on performance numbers alone, but to the overall look, comfort featuresm etc. The Z06 is defintiely on a different level in terms of performance (ala Viper, Noble), cars which don;t really have the interiors to go along with their incredible power, but still get many looks.
Responding to the previous post, my SLK55 is terrible in the snow and very sloppy in the wet...but what rear wheel drive car is good at these anyhow.

Sorry that was just a little sarcasm:devil:
