It's almost like asking what is better jam or jelly.

This question comes up often. For the most part it is a matter of personal preference. Typically if you road race the manual is better. A well shifted manual can also be slightly quicker at the track, but an auto is more consistent.

Myself I prefer a manual. The big question is what do you prefer?

Oh and welcome to DC. :buhbye:

It's your personal preference. Auto are great for cruising but for me the fun factor goes way up with a manual

I really like the automatic feature of my driver's side window.

I had manual window lifts on my '65, and it was a real pain to have to reach across the car and crank the vent windows and main windows up during those sudden southern downpours.

But, some people will tell you that a 'real' sports car has to have manual windows, that power windows ruin the experience (I'm not sure if they also believe that you have to listen to either the AM band or 8 track tapes for entertainment while piloting your sports car down the road, though).

Of course, all us C4, C5, and C6 drivers don't believe that, since you can't get manual windows in those cars!

I don't really understand why the presence or absence of a manual transmission is the core definition of a sports car.

We don't exclude coupes from the category, although some might argue that coupes "change the experience."

Many people seem quite happy to have all the power accessories (windows, brakes, steering, cruise control, and others), but if you mention an automatic transmission, then Good Lord, its as if a commandment handed down from on High had been violated.

First and foremost, its a Corvette, and if you want a manual transmmission, then get one. If you want an automatic, then get one of those. Either way, it's still a Corvette, and still a sports car.

Sure an automatic transmission Corvette it's still a sports car. But a slightly ruined one :D

Sorry, I respect your choice, it is your money after all, but unless you heave health reasons, get the manual please! :spanked:

Auto fans please don't come with the "consistency of launch" reasoning. These cars are fun toys, not professional dragsters. If one wants to get serious about drag racing, there are better and cheaper choices.

Having fun with an automatic lasts a week or so. Then people get bored. Why? Because it IS boring. Where is the challenge? Nothing can get wrong, there is no danger. What one can do, wonder all the time how consistent the computer can shift?
Also there is nothing to do properly and then be satisfied about your performance as a driver.

Driving a manual is like dancing, it is a joyful activity, where one must think and act fast.

Best automatics in the world: Bugatti DCT, VW DSG, Audi S-Tronic, Ferrari's and... stop; yes no GM A6... very far...
Even these best autos cannot give the same joy of driving. Because it is like being danced by a computer: always the same [perfect] moves, pretty much nothing the driver has to do, boooring...

I don't defend the automatic transmission choice because I have an automatic transmission - both my Corvettes came equipped with manual transmissions.

Everything you described can also be attributed to manually operated windows, brakes, and steering - but no one cares if you have those. Why does it matter so much to you that people choose automatic transmissions? I just don't get it.

I don't have a better Corvette because it has a six speed - I just have a different one.

Apparently, the vast majority of Corvette buyers disagree with your opinion as well, since the automatic transmission version became more popular with buyers in the early 1970's.

You're certainly welcome to your opinion, given that opinions are like voids surrounded by sphincter muscles - everyone's got one!

i've flip-flopped over the years. i started with a chevy pickup which i put a warmed over 355 into, and it had a 4L60E built by hughes performance. then after getting into motorcycles i really fell in love with manuals, especially out in the twisties, and i have to say that ratcheting through the gears up a mountain is a blast in my z06. but there is something to be said about automatics too... it's just flat out a blast to have a car with a ton of horsepower cruising down the road, and to be able to mash on the accelerator at any time and let the transmission do the thinking for you. i wouldn't want to do a road course or go through a canyon with one, but autos are fun at redlights imho.

for the c5 corvettes and fbodies though... i think it's really hard to beat the manual, for a very big (if quite lame) reason, and that is gas mileage. with the 6spd you can really dip down in the rpms at 70mph (i think mine runs somewhere around 1800 or 1900), and still have a decent rear end ratio. the 4spd auto just can't do it all with those few gears.
