MOTORTREND: Chronicling the Fastest Vettes
Fastest Tuner Corvette MT Has Tested
Lingenfelter Performance Engineering built a twin-turbo C5 that ran 226 mph on Transportation Research Center of Ohio's 7.5-mile high-bank oval test track-- accomplished using street radial tires and pump gas.
Quickest-Accelerating Tuner Corvette
Pitted against a Blue Angels F/A-18 jet, Steve Dumler's stock-looking '01 C5 fitted with a Lingenfelter Performance Engineering twin-turbo 427 LS-1 V-8 ran 9.24 at 150.27 mph (June 2002, page 84). Zero to 60 mph took just 1.97 seconds.
Quickest-Accelerating Stock Corvette
Pulled straight from the GM press fleet, we hustled an '02 Z06 six-speed through the quarter to a 12.48 at 114.9 mph (MT, February 2002, page 38).
During a qualifying run at the 1999 NHRA Gatornationals, Jim Epler's Easy Care-sponsored C5 Corvette Funny Car covered the quarter mile in 4.899 seconds.
Fastest Stock Corvette
As part of a top-speed test (August 1993, page 37), we tested a '93 Corvette ZR-1 (C4) to 181 mph, and a few years later we pushed a '99 Corvette Z-51 (C5) with an LS-1 V-8 to 173.6 mph (July 1999, page 40). We haven't had the opportunity to top-end a new 405-horse Z06, but stay tuned.
Fastest Sustained Speed in a Corvette
The 1985 Escort Endurance Champion Tommy Morrison averaged 175.885 mph (including pit stops!) over a 24-hour period in his modified Corvette ZR-1, speeding around a high-speed oval in Fort Stockton, Texas.
Winningest Corvette Ever
The '68 Corvette L-88 sponsored by Owens/Corning Fiberglas holds the title as the winningest Corvette in history. Some of the accomplishments include the 1969 and 1972 National Championships, 1968 and 1970 National Championship runner-up, and 1969 and 1970 class wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona.
Jim Epler's Easy Care-sponsored C5 Corvette blew past the finish line at 311.27 mph during the 1999 NHRA Gatornationals.
