WE ARE having a little problem installing the harmonic balancer on our 454. It is going on very hard and we just can't get it all the way on. Is some trick to this or do we have a real problem??? Tried the original and a brnd new one to no avail.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure there are no burrs or rough spots inside the balancer or on the crank. Polish both with some emery paper, and lube with ATF. Use the installer tool and away you go.

hone the ID to a snug/tight fit on the crank. Very common for a new balancer to need a little honing.

And make a few light passes with a fine file through the keyway slot, the key itself, and the slot with key installed in the crank. Just to debur the edges.

The balancer will not be flush with the end of the crank if that's what you are seeing. I think the bore in the balancer that the big washer fits into is about 1/16- 1/8 inch proud of the end of the crank.
