I bought another project without being done with my first project. I just couldn’t pass it up. It’s my second c4 I’ve owned and this one is a 1984.
I love corvettes, so I wanted to talk about it.

I did head gaskets. well one head gasket to fix the leak. I timed myself to see how long it would take a normal uneducated non-mechanic to do it. Here's what I learned. Head Gasket on a Corvette Video

180 out on the distributor. She’s firing with the exhaust valve open. That’s why you have fire in the carb. Ask me how I know.

you didn’t burn your car down did you? So maybe it was out 180 when I got it?

Almost burnt my garage down. Carb’s leaking a little fuel no big deal until it back fires through the carb. Then satin shows up in my garage hell fire the whole nine yards. Thank God I had a fire extinguisher. That’s another mess all it’s own. Needless to say I double check TDC from then on. Oh it was my parents garage and dad had the fire extinguisher lucky me. He would occasionally bust my chops about it until he passed away loved that man.

Did you verify it was at TDC by checking the piston on number one was at the top of the stroke? Zero comes around twice on the harmonic balancer for every complete rotation of the motor. You can have the balancer at zero and still be 180 out. As I discovered.

If you never had the distributor out then your plug wires are in the wrong order. Or you have a valve not closing. Check plug wires and run a compression check.

holy crap man. I’m glad you’re safe! You know I never double checked. I just marked the distributor and pulled it out but never double checked. Makes sense that it’s pushing fuel back out the carb after lighting it instead of sucking it in. Maybe the prior owner had it in backwards. This is the first check I’m doing. I appreciate the insight!

Man that happened years ago when I was younger than you. After putting head gaskets on a 65 mustang convertible. The car was only seven years old. That tells how old I am.
