Hey guys. I was writing regarding a strange ad under Corvette's for sale on the Eckler's website today.
Although I am relatively new to Corvette's, I've been involved in the car hobby since I was a teen and usually know my stuff pretty well.
Anyway, the ad is for a 1981 Beige car, and it's listed as an 81 Collector's Edition. As far as I know personally, there is no such thing as an 81 Collector's Edition Corvette. However, it's entirely possible (however unlikely  ) that I could be mistaken.
So am I right, or am I right?

As an afterthought, my 81 does have an odd shifter handle compared to other models. It's burled wood with the 81 crossed flags and corvette script engraved into the button. I've not seen this piece in any of the catalogs, so I must have a Collector's Edition too!!! :rolling:

ACTUALLY, there was a limited production vette in 82 called "Collector's Edition". It had a lift-up rear window and unique trim. It was also the most expensive vette up to that time at $22,538. There were 6759 of them built.
So it may have been actually built in 81, it was released as an 82. They also came with a car specific id plate. I'm guessing this is what you saw.

Nope, this was plain beige car like mine, I already knew about the 82 Collector Edition. Other than the pace car, the only other special model around that era I know of was the 78 Silver Anniversary Edition.

I sent the seller a request for information asking to clarify what he means by Collector Edition, and reminded him that '82 was the correct year for the Collector Edition.

I've got more bad news for you. I think that the shift knob that you're describing was an aftermarket item that was available in the 80s. I have the same one on mine. Now you're not even NCRS

Z-man is right. No 81 Collector's Edition. Seller is probably just plain wrong. When I bought my 81, the seller was adamant that it was an L82.

I suppose I should start a new thread asking "how many 1981 L82's were made." :D

Your shifter knob is an aftermarket item. I can remember them from a few years back. Knowling me, I've probably got an old Corvette parts catalogue with the knob in it...somewhere. Seems I never throw away any Corvette stuff.
