Rahm could step down next month.

From Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie :

As we've previously reported, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is considering departing his job, and sources tell NBC News that Emanuel MAY step down from his position as soon as October.

The most logical period for Rahm to leave is right after Congress recesses, before the midterms.

There has been speculation that Emanuel will run for mayor of Chicago in 2011 (and he himself expressed interest in the office to Charlie Rose in an April interview), after current Mayor Richard Daley announced earlier this month he would not run for re-election.

What's more, there are legal reasons why Rahm would need to officially leave his federal appointee job to run.

Federal law prohibits electioneering by federal government employees.

Nomination papers for the Chicago mayoral elections must be filed by Nov. 22, 2010.

New chief of staff would let Obama reset White House tone

President Obama may soon make one of the most fateful personnel decisions of his tenure, naming a new chief of staff whose job will be to help revive a presidency battered by the weak economy and a Republican resurgence.

Rahm Emanuel, who now holds the position, is expected to resign soon to run for mayor of Chicago, giving Obama a chance to reconfigure a White House team that has seen little high-level turnover.

OK, I'll say it. I'm visuallizing rats abandoning a sinking ship. No worry for Obama, though. There is an endless supply of rats to keep him stocked until 2012.

Interesting that the first 'team' to go was the economic one...
One could infer it as a tacit admission that stimulus DIDN'T work since they were 'the architects'.

You have a point ... as one of the heads of the (R) / Tea Party Rushbo stated ...

*I want Obama(s') (socialist/communist/national socialist fascist econom(y)(ics) to fail* ...

To this day, even the exotix can't figure out how bailing out the banks fits into this one ...

Not much cash that's distributable, yet... but they DO have Oprah.

No worries, Rahm won't need lotsa cash. He's got a Louisville Slugger.

Emanuel to announce soon whether he's quitting.

White House chief of staff exploring possible run for mayor of Chicago

WASHINGTON — Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, could announce by the end of this week whether he's leaving his job, NBC News reported Monday.

Emanuel is weighing a run for mayor of Chicago.

A source close to Emanuel said an announcement could come as early as Friday but no final decision has been made, according to NBC News.

Earlier Monday, President Barack Obama said: "I think that Rahm will have to make a decision quickly because running for mayor in Chicago is a serious enterprise."

Obama has said Emanuel, a Chicago native and former congressman, would be "a terrific mayor." Longtime Mayor Richard Daley isn't running again.

Mayoral candidates need 12,500 valid signatures to get on February's ballot.

Several media reports said Emanuel was likely to step down — or was at least considering such a move — before U.S. congressional elections on Nov. 2.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said earlier Monday that Emanuel was still "in the process of thinking about what he's going to do next."

"I'm not going to rule anything in or anything out," Gibbs said aboard Air Force One on the way to New York, when asked if he could exclude the chance of Emanuel leaving in October.

"He's in the process of thinking through what's best for Rahm."

Oh, the Drama ... :excited:

The tenant occupying Emanuel's home at 4228 N. Hermitage has refused to move out when the White House Chief of Staff returns, presumably, in October, the Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reports.

Robert Halpin, 59, and his wife Lori just re-signed a lease on the home that will last them through June 2011 -- just days before Mayor Daley announced his plans not to run. Halpin allegedly denied a request by Rahm to live in the basement until the lease ends.

The issue presents a residency problem for Emanuel. Election rules stipulate that a candidate prove residency for at least one year before the election.
