Rear Window Tint on 92 C4

Looking for suggestions on ways to tint the rear window w/out having to apply the normal film to the glass. Back in 1995 I recall seeing a tinted piece of plexiglass that was cut in the shape of the rear window. All you had to do is "insert" it in the rear window and secure it w/ small suction cups or adhesive. As such, it was removable too ....

Reason this is of interest to me..... My local body shop told me that the rear windows for C4's are no longer available. He said he had a guy who was rear-ended and shattered the rear window. He could not find a "new" window so he finally found one on eBay for $2,500. WoW..... Hence, I don't want to do anything to my rear window which may cause me to have to replace it.

The rear windows are out there. Usually a Corvette salvage yards will have them and I have also seen them on ebay for much cheaper that the price above. I had once saw the tint insert described above, but it was pretty expensive for what it is. Back in 1998 I had my 91 coupe tinted. The side windows cost about $30 each and the back window cost about $80-90. The tint is fairly easy to remove if needed and should return the rear window to normal once done.

:agree: There are enough wrecked C-4's out there getting a window shouldn't be to hard. I would just tint the window and forget it. I can't see how tinting it would ruin it and if the car got hit and the window damaged tint or no tint wouldn't matter other than the size of the pieces you are cleaning up.

Getting the tint off is tough, until you try oven cleaner. It works CRAZY well, I had to strip the tint off my Z-28 before military police would let me drive it on base. The back hatch is tricky because of the defroster, but that's how they do it when you pay to have it done. Never heard of temporary tint, but the mechanic who had to use Ebay probably only paid 3-500, and just charged the guy 2,500. I'm on e-bay all the time, and I've never seen one for more than 500.

Hearing that the rear windows on the coupes are not made any more worries me now. I had planned on getting the defogger wires re-soldered to the glass contacts since the previous owner damaged them. Now I'm starting to rethink that fix. If I can get the glass man to guarantee the glass then I'm good. We shall see.

Walmart has Window Tint Remover for $3. It takes off tint on an entire window in 10 seconds.
