the coating is just a clear coat. you can remove it easliy and, if you want, have it re-done. the original finish is more like a brushed aluminum. alot of us polish them to look like chrome. you can only do this by removing the clear coat first.

i've had the best results using "Mother's" aluminum polish. i've tried many others. but Mother's is the best.

keep in mind that aluminum is a fairly soft metal and does scratch easily. it may take some rubbing the get from a brushed to a polished finish. i spent hours doing mine, but once done, they should hold up for a long time.

since you have an '82, the rims are finned, so you might want to stay as original as possible.

I've used that "Mother's" polish on my rims, mirrors, and chrome trim around my distributor and ignition wires..... That stuff works wonders. :cheers:
