In a country of 300,000,000, there are 5,000 deaths from food borne illnesses. This sounds really bad, but is it? Can it reasonably be pushed lower? I wonder how many other countries of 300 million have fewer deaths from food. Those raw numbers mean very little. The question is, how does it compare to other developed countries and how does it compare to the past? Without that information, we could be doing really bad or we could be the best in the world.

 Tex, I am starting to think you really do read with rose-colored glasses.
No, it's my science background. When someone throws numbers out with no context and tries to make a point with those numbers, the scientist in me says "What do those numbers really mean?" 5000 may be a really horrible number, and more stringent controls might lower that to 1000. Or we might spend $500 billion and lower it to 4900. Where's the context?

The bill has nothing to do with food safety, or modernization. Control.. the theme of the bill is control.

Food smuggling and 500 people a year dying is not a concern.

But, I am a tinfoil hat wearer who don't believe much of anything the government says.. so you have to take it with a grain of salt.. If you can find or afford salt afterward..
I think we're on the same side here. My complaint is against the guy trying to use foggy numbers to justify the bill. I just left my tinfoil hat at home.
