I have a 1985 corvette, the steering column at the tilt mechinizam has 3-4" of up and down sloop in it. I was told some collar was split. Does the whole column need to be removed. Anybody have similiar expreince. Can this be handled by a weekend wrench. Any advise will be appreciated.

Too much play

What has happened is a tooth has broken off in the tilt mechanism. I had the same thing happen. Now for the good news, replacing the column is a real easy job and only took me an hour. I found one at a yard and swapped the entire thing, ignition , wheel and all. It cost me $140.00

The 4 bolts that hold the tilt bowl in place may be loose. Take the steering wheel off and the turn signal switch and take a peek down in there.

84 corvette column shaft slop

Hello, 84 corvette column shaft slop and I need help. Took the column down to where the ignition cylinder is but can't see how to proceed. The shaft joint seems tight, it feels like the lower beerings, but how do I get to them? Any help/warnings or diagrams would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you
Don
