Ok, one more question (well, two I guess). What is this and what does it do? It is the wire that comes from the bottom of the cooling fan, goes down to the crossmember and then up to a spot on the radiator just under the fill. This is on an 86 auto.

Hmmm... that was my first thought, just couldn't understand why it is wired straight to the fan and nothing else. There is nothing going from the sensor to anywhere else in the vehicle.

Not the 1st new owner to think that

water gets too low in radiator, switch grounds, kicks on light on dash
Opposite
Normally switch goes to ground ( low resistance ) through the coolant,
when coolant level drops no ground so light comes on.
There is a module under the dash somewhere that operates light
