ended the Jeep Grand Cherokee that was stopped in the left turn lane.

We had a similar accident in Ft. Worth a couple of weeks ago that killed an off-duty police officer sitting at a red light in his own car. The road was a divided four-lane thoroughfare with lots of traffic. A 64 year old man didn't see the red light or the stopped car and plowed into the back of the man's car going 60 mph. How can anyone be so inattentive as to miss that?
