hey there
i thougth that my problem with speedo and tach were just the cables
but removed the tach cable seem to me that its not too bad im replacing it anyway the thing is that i took a cable and put it in the distributor to see if it spins , guess what its not spinning , feels like vibration but definetly not spinning , where can i get the gear tha goes in the dist?? do i have to get all the dist or just that tiny gearing??
about the speedo didnt get too deep in it , but might be the cable too
does it have gearings that could be not working too?
whta can i do to make them work ??
thanks

Mallory makes tac drive dist.
Maybe good time to get rid of the points.

You can get rebuilt units from all of the vendors. I personally like the points distributors as they are less prone to stranding you, but that is just me. You can test the speedometer by putting a drill on the cable at the transmission end and spinning the cable while someone is watching the speedo. Most drills will give you about 55 MPH

You can test the tach the same way. Use a variable speed drill for best results. If you have a 90* head on the distributor, take it off and re-time your distributor (you will have to rotate it to align with the cable) Those 90* head can go bad while the dist is still good!

Good luck!

speedo & tach

you can replace the gear in the dist. its pretty simple.
take out the dis. (first mark the exact spot where it is on the engine, so as not to mess the time) there is a pin at the bottom that holds it all together use a small punch and press it out. the gears should come out. if you need to replace a\the small tach gear all you need to do is screw it off ( no need to mess with the pin at the bottom.) but it would be wise to replace them both.
you can get all the gear parts from the vatious catalogs (zip) or on ebay too.

I went thru this and am in the middle of replacing the actual tach. it was bad... though it spun freely, when it was hooked up to the tach it made this god owful noise. let me tell yu its no fun dropping the sterring wheel :thud: then you gotta worry about all those lite sockets in the back, they tend to snap off their respective so\ckets.... i ended up ordering replacement sockes from zip...........

but everything works great even those tiny lites
good luck..
ps watch those vacuum lines:thumbsup:
