so what are the actual chances of it locking up while you are driving?

Just bought a mInt condition 2 owner 2003 c5z06 and I am unsure if the recall was performed. I am going to follow up with a chevy dealer when they are open.
After reading this thread, why in the world would you take it to a dealer? Most dealerships have their heads up their asses about this issue. Have you actually read this entire thread? The column doesn't lock up while you're driving. That would be a death waiting to happen and GM would have done a recall about this issue. There is no recall for this, only TSB's.

You need to start with the first post in this thread and READ the entire post. Then watch the videos in the first post. Everything you need to know is contained within that first post, but there are also helpful incidents contained within other post in this thread so read the entire thread. It's only going to benefit YOU to know this thread inside and out.

I got the 10 second message today. :nuts:

I pulled the key and waited the 10 and then it started normal. Going to read up now so when it comes back again. :rolleyes:

Did some testing and during the testing the column lock actually locked up and it wouldn't start one time.

I found that the battery voltage had actually dropped to 11.8v and that's when it all locked up. Waited a few and it then started fine from 12.3v. I had just driven it and it was charging fine at 13.8v. So I will be looking for a new battery.

Whatever you do, don't put this problem off. It's a bitch to fix once you let it go too long.
I just put the new one in. AGM with 765cca and 120rc.

No problems and the volts hold at 12.6 now when it shuts down and the secondary systems are still running.

OK. Awhile back my column lock started having issues with the actual locking mechanism hanging up. So up put on the column lock bypass from corvette world of Houston. Problem solved until yesterday. Got in and got the service column lock.

Well for you guys who already have the bypass done you know you should pull fuse 23 and 25 and wait a minute and then reinstall with 25 going in first. That resets the BCM in case the bypass has gotten out of wack. The BCM goes through its start up and during that sequence commands the column lock into a full cycle starting over which should put everything back in order if that was the problem.

Well not for me.

So I am thinking the bypass has failed and am beginning to torque off when I decide to be a good little shade tree tech and trouble shoot it right.

First thing I do is turn the key and listen for the relay. Guess what, no switching in the relay. So I feel the relay and turn the key and for sure, nothing and still getting service column lock. I swap the relays and presto it now switches and no service column lock message.

So if you are getting this message and you are sure the battery is good, check the relay. They can go bad.

Also, on a side note, you have more of a chance for it to be the relay if you have a stopped up a/c drain that leaks down all over it. I have that issue and used the a/c the other day just before this happened.

For people afraid to do this themselves

Watch this ten minute video as he takes his time doing it. It is so easy if you have the problem and only $40 bucks. If you can put gas in your car you can do this! Video never stops, all in real time. I have said this before but I'll say it again....THANK YOU AJ for all your helpful information!

Another reason I like the A4's from 2001 and up, although this entire issue could be avoided if people took care of their batteries by using a battery tender. ;)

Hey, Junkman,

My sad tale about column lock bypass goes like this.

Purchased my 98 A4 coupe in March 2010, 16,000 miles. Took it to a dealership to have it inspected, they did factory recall campaign # 8200, which included wire harness kit and new designed lock plate. Harness K 2.195, FP Number 19244028.

No problems, no warning lights, alls well.

January 2015, replaced battery with Interstate Mega-Tron II. No problems, just thought it was time for a new one.

October 2015, got the dreaded pull key wait 10 seconds, dies at 2 mph. Steering wheel was not locked. Towed to my mechanic, (not a dealership), they reprogrammed bcm, worked fine except the column lock warning light went on every time I start the car. Mechanic said he could not clear the light, thought a dealership might be able to, but I had learned my lesson about dealerships, so I have lived with it since, over 25,000 miles.

But now, due to age and illness, it is time to sell. So I want to get the warning light out, and found this thread. I cannot open the two videos by Paul Koerner on page 1, could not find them on U tube either. But I did watch the video on page 6, looks very simple. But looking at my bcm, I see a couple of light colored wire harnesses attached to the harnesses going into the bcm that are not in the video on pg 6. (See attached photo)



So I'm thinking "Go ahead and add the kit like Junkman says", but I also saw one guy talked about removing fuses 23 and 25, waiting a minute and re-installing them, 25 first. So I thought "I'll try that first."

So I do that, put the cover back on the fuse box, fire up the engine and see "Pull key wait 10 seconds", and now it shuts down at 2 mph.

So now I will be ordering the patch kit, unless you tell me not to.

No current codes, H codes are 40BCM, 2587, 2592, and 2723. 28-TCM, C1226, 1243, and 1288.

First off, I fixed the links to the videos. I have uploaded them to my You Tube channel so that they don't get lost on the web again. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Second, you should have already had that harness installed. What in the world are you waiting for? :spanked:

OK, harness installed, warning light is gone.

What was I waiting for?? I am not a mechanic, always accepted the story I got from first dealerships, then my "trusted mechanic". I had never looked for a forum like this.

I found Digital about a month ago, and you have solved two major problems for me, and I have a couple more to work on.

Thanks for your help, more questions on a new thread now.

And to think, I posted your solution 8 years ago. You actually believed some hack at a stealership? Those of us in the know realize that a stealership is where you go to donate money and keep the same issue that you came in with. Welcome to getting unplugged from the stealership matrix. ;)

I've owned my Corvette, (2004 Commemorative Edition) for a number of years. It's 2019 now and I bought it over 4 years ago.

The first owner had kept all of the service records for the vehicle and when he sold the car to me, he gave me the service record folder which he maintained.

I work a lot and my Corvette is my Sunday Day car. Often I find that because I don't get to drive it much, the battery drains down and I have to charge it between uses. In my case, (Column Lock, Message), I had to charge the battery, as it was really low. When the charge was complete, I noticed the Battery Charger needle did not get all the way up to 100% on the charger. But it did get high enough, (probably around 90%-95%) to start the car.

After starting it and driving it for a day, I let it sit for a couple of days, without starting it. Then when I went to start it, the message, "Pull Key Out, Wait 10 Seconds" appeared. So I followed the directions and took out the key from the ignition, waited 10 seconds, reinserted the key and again the message came up. I did it again, same thing except this time another message appeared, "Steering Column Lock".

Just to be clear, this is a manual transmission, 2004, American vehicle.

I'm wondering, if the first step I should take, based upon the history I have with my battery charging, would be to REPLACE MY BATTERY TO SEE IF THIS PROBLEM IS RESLOLVED BY TAKING THAT COURSE OF ACTION?

Second, if it doesn't resolve this issue, I'm wondering if you can comment on this product as opposed to the one you recommended in the Tread.

One More Thing Junkman

I mentioned the previous owners service records because in reviewing them, after this problem occurred, I did not find any indication, within his folder, that he had this problem address as part of the RECALL.
