I set my timing without a timing light, engine ran fine but I wanted to get it "perfect" so I used my timing light today.... surprise: timing was approximately 25 degrees advanced with the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged

I tried to get it to 8 degrees advanced but the engine wouldn't idle with less than 12 degrees advance.... :WTF

This is a new harmonic balancer and a 'bolt on' timing tab. When I adjusted the valve lash I checked that the balancer mark is at 'zero' when the #1 piston is at TDC.

any ideas ??

Thanks for the links, great info. I'll bookmark a few...

I am just very surprised that the engine runs with that much advance. Every SB should run and idle fine anywhere from 2-12 degrees initial timing - mine does not

I'll check it again today and see what the total timing at 2500-3000 rpm is.
