Found out that my water pump is leaking. I already bought a new water pump and will get it installed. The pump is leaking through the weep hole, so as i understand the bearings are bad, hence the purchase of the new water pump. As a temporary fix, though, so i can at least reach the weekend to fix it, will putting in a coolant stop leak treatment do any good? Or would it be useless to put that crap in my system, especially since it's going to be drained anyway?

Basically, I don't have time during the week, with work and all, so I just need to buy a few days time so that I can take care of it over the weekend.

Don't use the stop leak if you are planning on replacing the pump in a few days. It will only cause other parts of the system to gum up and require a flush after the fact.

:agree:......it's a bad idea. Better off keep putting water/antifreeze in it until you can get to it or park it...

:agree: 100%

I actually drove mine for nearly a month with a major leak. At the beginning of every trip, I had to add about a gallon of water!! Sure was great once I was able to replace the pump!

Try not to let your Opti get wet. When you install the new water pump (about an hour) drill and tap the weep hole for a 1/8" pipe thread. Get a 1/8" barbed fitting and a piece of clear hose at an aquarium supply shop and route the weep hole away from the opti so that in the future a little water pump job doesn't turn into something bigger.

Go ahead, ask me how I know.;)

Bad news if your bearing locks up and throws the serpentine belt on the freeway.
You dont have to worry about that with the LTx motors as the water pump is driven off the cam, not the belt ;)

stop leak = ultra fail

if theres a leak, it needs fixed, not duct taped

stopleak and all those other fixers usually sound promising and helpful, but really all they do is just cause other problems.

I agree with all the others!

It will cause nothing but problems to use stop leak. Stop leak is for small cracks an pinholes. Not huge gaps between the impeller shaft and front water pump seal.

Here is what is most likely going on in your water pump. Your bearing has gotten play in it and that causes your impeller shaft to wobble while its turning. The seal only has so much distance to the shaft that it can properly seal against. You have exceeded that distance and coolant is passing by the seal to enter a chamber in the front of your water pump that leaves it no where to go but out the weep hole. The weep hole is there to let people know the front seal on the water pump is failed and a new water pump is going to be needed. Eventually the leak will get so bad that coolant will constantly flow out the weep hole while the car is parked!

I agree!

I think you have already made the correct decision BUT just if anyone asks YOU in the future if they should or should NOT use it... Ask them if they have it in their budget to also replace their heater core and rad!

Good luck!

I didn't use the stop leak, and i finally got the new water pump on. So far no leaks, and car's running cooler than before.

It was a really straightforward process, the biggest pain was
scraping off the old gaskets, and for that my back is killing me. Not fun.

And I had a little scare after it was all back together.... My car wouldn't start! Turns out the coil to opti wire wasn't fully seated.

I hope you took 1963SS advice. Replacing the WP is a pain, but replacing an opti is worse.
