http://www.businessweek.com/news/20...urn-solar-panels-to-white-house-chu-says.html

So how much energy will the first family need to use to pay for this "investment"???

Thomas Pyle, president of the Institute for Energy Research, a free-market analysis group in Washington, said the rooftop panels will underscore hostility by Obama toward fossil fuels such as coal.

‘Ineffective, Expensive’

Solar energy is “ineffective, expensive and unreliable and will continue to be in our lifetimes and probably our children’s lifetimes and beyond,” Pyle said in an interview.

The panels will mark the first time solar energy has been used for the private residence of the White House, according to the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Carter’s panels were above offices and used for hot water, not electricity.

2 things they never mention...

1: Longevity:
The longevity of the panels is roughly 5 years, after that, they just don't produce any more electricity...

why? the substrates, especially the new 'efficient ones' are made with cadmium telluride. The telluride breaks down and...

2: Toxic:
they are exceedingly toxic, especially if you have to dispose of a solar farm...

On a side note note, telluride is expensive and rare. Some think that the supply could be exhausted in a few years if solar energy were to get the boost necessary to bring it into the realm of where the green laws want it.

E-Waste looms behind solar-power boom.
