Finally, and it's a UCLA grad student, of all people..

Charges of hateful racism have been hurled at the tea party movement over the last year, but little substantive work has been done to actually prove these accusations. But a new analysis at the scene of this year’s 9/12 Taxpayer March on Washington –organized in part by national tea party organizer FreedomWorks — confirms that the vast majority of activists are energized over narrower concerns about the size and scope of government and federal spending policies.

UCLA graduate student Emily Ekins says she spent the summer in Washington studying the tea party dynamic and working as an intern at the Cato Institute, a libertarian policy think tank. It was at the 9/12 march where Ekins decided to put the rumors of racism to rest.

Dividing the crowd into rows and taking a snapshot of each sign she passed, Ekins quickly accumulated a sizable sampling of 250 sign photos, the majority of which reflected a “limited government ethos,” she recently told the Washington Post. Under this banner, she said, rally-goers advertised their support for liberty, low taxes, reduced spending and deficits and concerns about creeping socialism. (Click here to see some of Ekins’ photos)

Examples ranged from the simple message “$top the $pending” scrawled in black-marker block letters to more elaborate drawings of bar charts, stop signs and one poster with the slogan “Socialism is Legal Theft” and a stick-figure socialist pointing a gun at the head of a taxpayer.

There were uglier messages, too – including “Obama Bin Lyin’ – Impeach Now“ and ”Somewhere in Kenya a Village is Missing its Idiot.” But Ekins’s analysis showed that only about a quarter of all signs reflected direct anger with Obama. Only 5 percent of the total mentioned the president’s race or religion, and slightly more than 1 percent questioned his American citizenship.

Contrary to the claims of prominent Democrats such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the NAACP which recently publicly condemned the tea party over racism allegations, Ekins’ study concluded that the attention tea party rallies have received over the last year overwhelmingly focused on the more controversial messages, the clear minority in the movement.

“Really this is an issue of salience,” Ekins told the Post. “Just because a couple of percentage points of signs have those messages doesn‘t mean the other people don’t share those views, but it doesn’t mean they do, either. But when 25 percent of the coverage is devoted to those signs, it suggests that this is the issue that 25 percent of people think is so important that they’re going to put it on a sign, when it’s actually only a couple of people.”

Adam Brandon, a spokesman for FreedomWorks, told the Post that his organization did not instruct protesters to limit their messages, but he said he personally patrolled the crowd and asked a few protesters carrying signs depicting Obama as Adolf Hitler to leave the rally.

The left will just point out that the tea party thinks it, It just doen't display it

Sorta like that famous line from Jackie Gleeson in Smokie and the Bandit: Its OK to think about it but don't do it, it won't look good on my highway :D

I'm still laughing over the thread we had when we reviewed the washington mall tea party rally and we asked how many blacks were there and I think it was you that posted up pictures that equaled about five blacks total...

Funny as hell:laughing:

I'm curious... do you spout off in the same fashion about the the New York Philharmonic Orchestra -being racist due to the lack of blacks attending their concerts ? How about a Synagogue ? Are they racist due to the lack of black attendees ? -Now compare this to the NAACP or the Black Caucus.

What a simplistic ideology and thought process -you have.

Really, I don't the the Tea Party is as concerned with race as you guys are.

You guys play the race card, use the race issue, count the blacks per event, etc. etc. The rest of us really aren't concerned. No, the right don't use the black race as a pawn, blacks are welcome without having to "know their place", on the right. They don't have to conform to the "black policies" of the right because we really don't care about color.

For those of us on the right, blacks are not "property", we don't try to "capture the black vote", if they like the policies and appreciate the stance on the issues, blacks are welcome. If not, we won't get all pissy about it.

Blacks have been voting against their own values and their own interests for 40 years.. they are starting to wake up to that fact, that's why race has become so important over the last few years. That's why Obama has now stooped to "intellectual criticism" of the black race. The dems think they "own" the blacks, and they are in for a rude awakening..

If you really want to see a stark difference between the Tea PArty, and say the communist rallies, go look at the trash left after each one. The trash attending the rallies, matches the trash they left. ;)

Yes and no.

I see all the tea party proponents post up threads here and at CF and it's all about take back america, we want our country back to the way it was before all the PC for non-white races in our country, speak english, worship christian, say god during the pledge, keep statues of christain related themes at govt places, immigrants sponging up welfare ect...

I mean....

I want everybody to speak only english, and live in god fearing cities with catholic churches, apple pie, baseball, hot dogs, beaver cleaver's happy monogomus american husban and wife never divorced family...kinda life....

But times change, and soo much of that immigration and foreign languages were already under our noses, but different races, and so much is also different today.

It really seems by posts here and everywhere else.... that the tea party wants a lifestyle that is no longer possible today but is also a very coveted snapshot of life in america in the 50's

That's just not possible with today's globalism and current legal immigrant population.

Yes it is ! It's not just a saying -it has real meaning for at least 50% of the country. (I would bet on 70%)

Take back our country.

PS: Thank you for your admission -that it has "not-thing-one" to do with race.

Blacks have been here all along. They helped make the country, we would like to have back. You guys are the race-warriors, you and Al Sharpton see race in everything, as do most democrats. They are so scared of losing the black vote, that they have to keep race up as a top issue. Sorry, we just don't want to play that game anymore..

This is what the tea party wants to return america to...

Ya can't rewrite history.
Fixed it for you.

Desi Arnez was a Cuban immigrant. Pretty talented too. Means nothing. You have nothing.

Wilson segregated the military, the blacka and whites. The democrats kept the blacks from voting, would turn them away at the polls, especially in the south.

You have no idea what the Tea Party means when it says it wants to take America back. Just like all the rest on the left, you have no concept, so you construct your own...and attempt to spew it with impunity.

You do realize, that you just proved our point, don't you?

Who made those shows? The liberal elite. Who created segregation? The liberal elite. Who fought the civil rights act tooth and nail? The liberal elite. Who uses race at any criticism? The liberal elite.

I can sign on to that.

Everything that comes out of hollywood or the media?

Too broad brush for me.
