Who's in charge here?

I have a question on posting. Most know who I am and the type of posts I put on the various vette forums. I am not a vendor, nor do I have a parts business or even a web site. What I do is tell people how to do the job right, so if they are doing the job or farming it out they will know the questions to ask so they don't ripped off. I take in work if I have time and the person wants the best job on the market- period.

My question: if I continue to post these involved how to's am I going to be harrassed to be a supporting vendor? One place I have been for years and know I have saved fellow corvette owners thousands of dollars is attempting to do this to me now. I can not afford to pay these fees so I may just keep my experience with these cars to myself and stop the picture posts all together. Any feedback?

You know, that OTHER place.
Thanks Darrow,
It is not happening here and I have always found my posts to be receptive here for the past year. I would like to talk with the person in charge at the other place but I have no way of contacting him. We even met at Carlisle years ago. Troy if you visit here please contact me to discuss.
Gary, I have to comment on this. I have been a member of this forum and perhaps the other forum you are talking about since 2003. In that time I have seen you post helpful, detailed, carefully written instructions and advice to an incredible amount of people. ALL of this given with a spirit of sharing your hard earned knowledge and just plain generosity. I, and countless others have benefited from it.

My take on it? You shouldn't have to pay them, they should be paying you! If this is the thanks you get on this or any other forum, it's motivated by an absurd sense of greed.

Gotta pay for them "new" servers.:rolling:

:agree:

Patrick is usually lurking. Maybe he'll see this and comment. I, for one, think that sharing info is a great thing. It's why we're all here in the first place. And so what if you occasionally have enough time to build for someone? It's NOT your primary source of income as it is with the vendor(s)..

Well put Larry.
Others taking the time and effort to make "How-to" posts are one of the best things I've found on DC. Several members (grumpyvette comes to mind) have done this over the years and saved a lot of people headaches and money. Learning while getting the job done right seems to be the attitude round these forums sections. Patrick would know the difference between spreading correct knowledge and trying to sell something.

 More power to helping one another.

:agree: too. Just another way that place chooses to alienate their "bread and butter". [email protected] em'
One would think that only people who own a (corvette related) business have to be a supporting vendor.... one would think that that rule was created to prevent individuals from conducting business and making profit without paying the forum owner(s)....
Now, that's great but Gary and several others have helped many many other members with advice and very often saved them a lot of money.

Forcing members like Gary who are the most valuable members of a forum to become a supporting vendor is simply BS....

Hey Gary,

Your how-to posts are what this forum is all about. DC gives guys like yourself who have lots of knowledge and experience the opportunity to help out those who have niether. We appreciate you taking the time to put together those threads with instructions and pics, so keep it up!

We'd run into issues if you were using the site as free advertisement. First off, the site has bills to pay. It does so by selling ad space. If vendors can get advertising for free there's no reason for them to pay for banners like the one on the left of your screen and the site goes under... this is bad. Second, if someone isn't paying for advertisment, it's not fair to the supporting vendors who are helping keep the site running.

PLEASE keep posting all your helpful info! Avoid blatantly advertising your goods or services (use PM's or email as you already have been) and you're good to go

P.S. I'll make sure Pat sees this thread as he has final say on things and I'm not misleading you.

Well said, on all points.

I can't tell ya how many times I've been sorted and straightened out by DC members with detailed "how-to" threads. I've lost count but I'm sure raidmagic and grumpyvette could tell ya. That type of assistance is the perfect mode for upholding and spreading the Vette community. If Gary is another one of those amazing members who takes that extra step to help other members, than he's got DC in his corner for every round.

Bro, you are so old school!

I guess I could sum it up like this... all you guys all have post-CF-traumatic-stress-disorder.

I'm not sure whether to slide you guys a bottle of Jack Daniels and some Xanax, or just hug you and tell you everything is gonna be ok...

On DC you just have to remember to breathe! It's all good. If you are having fun, I'm having fun. If you are getting rich off the site, send us some so we can pay the bills. Otherwise I have to rob old ladies after they cash their social security checks.

That should about sum it GTR. I think your safe and welcome here:thumbsup:
I'm kinda in the same boat as Gary. I recieved the same request he did. But I am a new business selling corvette parts and rebuilds. I know I have to become a supporting vendor on a corvette site. Regardless of which one I choose it will put a dent in operating capital. I've already talked to Patrick about this and he made me an attractive offer. But here's my problem. Which one? We all know the other place is the largest according to member count. With the influx of people coming over here my decision is getting harder each day. I realize it's hard for everyone here to be unbiased but I have to look at this from a business point of view.
Some of you may reconize me from the other place. Those who know me know I don't have a "give me money or go away" attitude. I try to help everyone who has a question and if they need parts or services I help there also. I'm also not new to Corvettes. I've been repairing them for over 30 years. After a work related injury I had time to think and decided to try it on my own. Any ideas or advice or even opinions I would greatly appreciate.
Sorry Gary, I didn't mean to step on your thread.
Mike
