Active handling saved the DC C6 - it really works!

I've been driving the C6 a lot now ... but this car is either trying to kill me or get me in jail, one of the two. Depending on the moment.

Seriously, active handling saved this car from being a debris field somewhere on 90E last night.

It was raining pretty good, about 2am, doing just 65mph in a 55mph on my rather bald and chunked run flats. A real yawner of a drive.

I had no issues driving in the rain for the first 10 miles or so in the middle lane. Saw some cars ahead so I slowly moved to the left lane and almost immediately hit standing water, the C6 just came out from under me.

The car instantly snapped 45 degrees sideways after hitting the water, the back wheels stayed in the left lane but the front of the car was now in the middle lane.

I knew I was in big trouble, I puckered my butt hole and calmly corrected the steering to get her pointed straight and was prepared for the car to snap back the other way... but it didn't. It was all over. I was now just cruising along again in the middle lane... but 40mph. I lost 25mph somewhere.

I actually felt the car save itself, felt it sending rapid fire commands to the brakes and it was over as fast as it happened. GM saved the car. I couldn't imagine any human could have done better.

I bet the truckers in the far right lane enjoyed the show, no doubt they were on the radio with a "DID YOU JUST SEE WHAT THAT VETTE JUST DID??". I wish I could have heard it.

Jesus Patrick! Sounds like you better stay off the highways for a while.

It really is amazing what they can do with computer controls though isn't it?

The DC C6 was forged in the proving grounds of Tornado Alley, painstakingly cured cross-country (twice) and later refined by Aaron Pfadt at Gingerman Raceway. It can't tell the difference between sun or sprinkles anymore. You're only driving it as much as it wants you to think you are.

It's now in stage 3 of a rare form of adrenalitis; you won't be able to phase it.

It's got you covered like a jimmy cap.

Yes the C6 is great with its active handling. But it still only goes where the driver makes it to go. They still do not compensate for panic and stupidity. It still takes a cool driver to recover from some thing like that.

This statement is very true as active handling on my car couldn't keep us on the entrance ramp (only one lane wide) but I firmly believe kept us from spinning and or flipping as we barreled X-country. Quick review; sold the car and in the hands of the new owner, hit some water and flew off the ramp under full throttle @ about 70 in 3rd gear...

Great Save, I never run without at least the comp mode on in mine. I almost lost it at 120 mph or so a while back when I hit a slick patch on the freeway. I thought for sure I was going into the wall!

Patrick,

Maybe you should take a break from driving for a little while and let someone else drive....you can sit in the back and enjoy the view/ride knowing that you'll be safe from anything!

i ah a very similiar experience in a 86 gt 5.0 car did a half turn i was going down highway spun around<now facing cars behind me>i grabbed wheel and she came back around. That had to be the scariest almost wreck of my life man i thought for sure i was gonna eat some wall and maybe another car or 2,oh yea and that car had NOTHING for traction controll, just god ol' luck i guess, but i can relate on the shitting of ones pants!:surprised

As most know I hate electronics because I don't really understand them and can not fix them myself. There, that is said up front.

Having said that I can say that anti lock brakes saved my life, quite literally, once and saved another of my casr once.

I actually like the AH and I am surprised as to how often this light will come on and yes, it does offer me a bit more security particularly in the rain.

On the other side I think traction control is great for the rain otherwise useless and I also believe Comp mode to be a form of 'wanking' that is a waste.

My bottom line is some is good and some is, in my personal opinion, bells&whistles.

I do believe the AH saves cars/lives as do the anti-lock brakes.

I too hate electronics but....

A/H is a Godsend for everyday driving in the real world.
ABS? If it ain't got it, I ain't driving it.
T/C? Not liking it but maybe I'll change my song if it ever gets my ass out of a bind.

The fact that you were just cruising at a sane speed when that happened to you is a real eye opener for me. Makes me rethink my complacency level...

I disliked the traction control on the C5. I did most of my driving with it off or in Competitive Driving Mode (also off). I haven’t had a chance to test the new C6’s traction control to the extreme yet. From what I’ve experienced in the few days I’ve had it, it seems much better. Once the car is broken in, I’ll start driving it harder and then I’ll decide.

Glad you’re OK Pat! If something happened to you I would be very sad…

Update: the traction control on the C6 is just as bad as it was on the C5 when it comes to “spirited” driving. I found out this morning while accelerating aggressively…I thought the damn engine blew up the way that thing nose dived…damn!
