ALMS GT2 class

With Porsche a class down in LM racing, the C6R seems a long ways away from its actual market competition. I mean, it's grat that we're spanking Ferrari and Aston tail, but are their buyers really looking at the race results when they make their decision? I doubt it.

I don't know what the classification rules are, but why doesn't GM build a Z06R that can run in the GT2 class against the Porsches? Can they only run one class? Are there limitations that I don't know about? The stock vettes are the same size as the porsches, and put out roughly the same power (depending on trim). I think that would really help them start stealing more sales from Porsche. Of course, so would actually building the Blue Devil!

Anyone with knowledge on the subject care to enlighten me?

i totally agree. i've posted similar threads. i dont know why there is no vette in the GT2 class. it might be too expensive to run 2 cars in gt1 and a car in gt2 but it would be great to see a z06-gt2 running around with the 911's and panoz in ALMS. i also feel that porches are always too accomidated to race. racing regulations usually let them loose alot of weight and let their engine gain too much power. the c6 is the same size as a 911 and weights more but if they were to race the vette would have to be much heavier than the 911 with no significant hp increase. lets hope we see a z06-gt2

there was supposed to be a C5 in GT2 ( called GT back then) but it never materialised . I searched and searched the web for details but nada.

Personally i'd love to see a Vette in GT2 (homologation special??) , but i think that right now GM is getting more bang for their advertising buck in GT1 .

Then again BMW made a ton of waves with 4 M3s in '01.Great idea tho. I wonder if a privateer will take up the challenge.

Id rather have Corvette beat Aston and Ferrari... but if they could run a gt1 and gt2 class vette:partyon:

I sure thought the C6 weighed less than the Porches, but I may be wrong. I love beating up on Ferrari and Aston Martin, but , like I said, people that buy those cars don't even look at vettes. Like it or not, Porsche is who our rivalry is with, and I'd love to walk into their game and smack them around.

I highly doubt you'll see a factory backed/run Vette in GT2 or any other class/series for that matter for some time to come, GM has their racing life pretty well planned out and it doesnt include overlap of classes/series.

This is why Pontiac was pulled from NASCAR, and put into Grand Am, Pontiac dominates the Rolex series now, there used to be Chevys and Caddies in the series too(and there still can be) but GM wants Pontiac to be the big dog there, hence the Pratt&Miller built GTO-R model, and lack of any factory assisted Caddies....the Cadillac is in Speed World Challenge, Speed has Corvettes and GTO but none are factory backed. ALMS has the Corvette and could run GTO-R's or CTS-VR's b ut doesnt.

Monte Carlo=NASCAR
Corvette =ALMS
CTS-V=SWC
GTO, Pontiac= Grand American

the one car GM really seems to promote as a way to win in more than on class/sanctioning body is the Chevy Cobalt....These cars(and the predecessor, Cavalier) pretty much dominate their class in drag racing(recently setting the first ever sub 7 second 1/4mile by a FWD car) and has an ever increasing presence(and winning resume) in Grand Am Cup.

Dont forget about Rhys Millen and drifting... not my cup of tea but he is doing great in that:thumbsup:

I believe the reason why they are in GT-1 is because when they began developing the C5-R, the Dodge Viper GTS-R was dominating the class. I believe that the Viper is more of a natural rival than the 911. I also believe that Chrysler's dominance in that class grated on their nerves more than Porsche's dominance in GT-2. Just my $.02.

In some respects I agree with you guys, in some not. In many ways, raw performance for one, the Corvette is a true Supercar (especially the new Z06).

GM dumbs-down the Corvette for those of us that can't handle the car. This means a lot of excessive safety gadgets, but moreso, the runflat tires and HORRIBLE alignment. If you buy a new Porsche, BMW M3/M5 etc, you would get a car with -2 deg neg camber. What does this mean?? It means that in magazine tests, their cars handle as good as the Vette. However, as those of you that track your cars know, a track-aligned C5 will stomp any Porsche street car around (barring the Carrerra GT or an over-boosted Turbo). I know this, as I used to own a Twin Turbo Porsche, and it handled horribly, but went like you-know-what in a straight line.

However, GM continues to put wimply brakes and plastic interiors in the cars we love. Also, they are cheap!

BUT, when you look at the power, the drivetrain, and the awesome all-aluminum suspension (BMW still can't figure that out!), it is truely in a supercar class.

Now on another note, I'm pretty sure that you can run a Corvette in ALMS GT2. Basically, the engine restrictor/weight package is different, and you have to run different aero parts.

I would gladly volunteer to convert my new car into a GT2 car if you can find about $1.5 million to cover everything. Considering I haven't been able to find a penny to cover my SPEED GT effort (which is actually much better racing to watch) I won't hold my breath!

Im much happier with the C6R running in the GT1 class, I mean Porsches cant really compete well price for price. The C6 Z06 is cheaper then the base 997 911 however a Z51 C6 which is what 50K can beat the 911 S around a race track.

The C6 Z06 will eat any Porsche short of the Carrera GT and thats what the blue devil is for.

I agree, IMHO GM is not concerned about Porsche. GM is in SERIOUS competition with almost every other carmaker at some level but not Porsche (or Maybach, Ashton Martin, Lambrogini, Ferrari, etc.,).

I know some of you will take exception to this but keep in mind that Corvette is not the primary business for GM. It's passenger cars, SUV's and trucks.
