hey guys i have been thinking about getting a blackout kit for my black 85 vette. Have any of you guys have had any problems with the kit staying on? and will i get pulled over in new jersey for having them?

I had problems.I almost got rear ended twice, the cars were skidding up to my bumper and blaring horns..I then looked at the rear and could barely see the brake lights thru the blackouts...I had them for years on my c5 with no issues, but the brake lights were alot brighter.

You want it on permanently or just for shows? I got a free "static cling" kit that I don't use...I highly doubt that it would stay on at any kind of speed though. Early C4.

I bought the whole $100 kit front and back a few weeks ago. See the Aqua Blue wheels thread and you'll see my car with them on. Not worth $100 for sure. I love the front pieces, but not sure if I'll keep the back one's on. My third brake middle light isn't covered though. If I had it to do again I'd just order the front pieces. I like how they fill in the front fog lights holes on the later C4 body. Otherwise go with the static cling one's. Much cheaper.

Don't know about NJ, but I've had the black out kit on my car for four or five years now in Fla. The lights shine through them just fine, and I have never had any problem with them in that respect. The little tabs they give you to hold them on don't work that well, I have mine drilled and bolted on with small nuts and bolts. I painted the heads black so you can hardly see them.

The worst is when in traffic and the sun is in front of you,the glare for the driver behind you is intense and they can't see your brakelights at all.
If someone does rear end you with blackouts on the car,and they hurt their neck and such, you're insurance company will not cover you because you're car was illegal.Imagine sitting in the court room getting slammed by the judge,as the medical bills pile up for the other cars passengers.
I love blackouts,but not worth the risk to me..maybe on a garage queen,or for shows,but not a daily driver..jmo.

I lived in NJ for most of my life and just about any type of tint or black out on lights or windows is illegal. Some township police really don't care while others will nail you for even the lightest shade of tint. Sure glad I'm now in Florida.:)

yea Florida rules are nice. I still have Florida plates on and I have been living in Jersey for 2 or more years. but after seeing a car crash right in front of me last night, I am most likely not to get the blackout kit now

Wow all this depresses as I really wanted to blackout the whole car. They do make brighter LED taillights for our cars. Do you guys think that putting blackouts over them would be bright enough?

I gotta say my lights shine through the front and rear pieces with no issues. I had a buddy step on my brakes last night, and there wouldn't be any issue in the rear. Maybe it's the brand I bought. I got them from Ecklers the smoked set for $116. Any how I'm only going to leave the fronts on, and I'm going to remove the back, and go with a set of the Red LED tail lights. They make sets with the silver in them and clear lenses, but I think that went out years ago with the fast and furious film. The Leds I think will look sweet on the car.

I like the look of the LED lights better than the black outs anyway. Also, if someone hits you and says that he didn't see your stop lights he has no business driving because he must be blind:cool:

Yeah the LED lights I've looked at say street legal at least. In photo's on EBAY on a corvette they seem to look pretty sweet. Just gotta decide if I want to spend $200 on tail lights that already work. :smack

i have an 89 and i bought the ecklers blackout kit for mine and when i recieved it was not happy with the look because of the rubber around the edges looked horrible when on the car so after removing the rubber edges and then mounting it looks 100 times better and to finish the look i painted the top third brake light and the side markers on the car with tint spray it really looks great and no issues with brake light visibility here is a video of a walk around of the car when it was finished

I always liked the black out look on most cars, especially Corvettes. The only problem that I can foresee is when you travel through NJ, they are like the gestapo when it comes to any revenue they feel entitled to. I was pulled over twice for having a small American flag hanging on my rear view and a few times I was pulled over for having the slightest tint on the front windows. My car is registered in NY, but they still decided to give me the ticket even though the tri-state compact laws dictates I should not receive the ticket. (Thats why it always gets dismissed, just a pain in the ass that I have to deal with it)
