I am just about to move from El Paso, TX to Savannah, GA and I was wondering if anybody have the experience of loading a C5 onto a U-haul transporter. I checked two U-haul dealers and one said that you can't and the other said yes. Any input is appreciated...

Thanks for your comments Gents....to clarify the "auto transporter" is the one you tow your vehicle with all 4 tires off the ground:thumbsup: ...there is no way in hell that I will tow "Vettie my baby" using the "tow dolly" (just with the front tires off the ground). I rather drive it...if it comes to that. Please, keep those comments coming they are greatly appreciated.

I used a u-haul car trailer for a 900 mile trip. Double check the tires and the surge brakes. The latch, it's a screw down thing, that holds the trailer to the hitch ball is a one size fits all and required constant (every 50 or so miles) tightening. The trailer tires were out of balance so I had to stay in the 60-65 MPH range.

cjs27410, which vette did you load, the C5? Is that is the case I am sold. I will be driving an Expedition and the Vette and you can imagine how big my gas bill is going to be...thanks for the input:cheers:

Papo Vette

I hauled my daughter's C4 from NY to Calif. on my 16' flatbed trailer. I know yours is a C5, but what I'm saying should apply:

DON'T put a car cover on. The wind buffets the hell out of it and it will scratch the paint. Better to clean the Vette later.

If the ramps are not long enough, that come with the trailer, you can lenghten them with some 2x12 lumber. My ramps are 6' long and to get my C4 up on the trailer I take 2x12 boards, 8' long and put them on the ramps, about 1' up from the ground. Support them underneath with other lumber so they don't flex and crack. This will give a better angle to clear the chin spoiler. When the Vette is loaded just slide the 2x12's under the Vette. Tie or chain them in place. I nail mine to my wood deck.

Have a safe trip..Check the tiedowns frequently....

Regards, Frank:thumbsup:

I would look for a used trailer to buy. I have seen some for 600-800 dollars. You can't believe how many time you would use it later. If you are going to rent it for half the price, you might go ahead and buy one. If you don't need one when you get there you can resale it and re-coop your money.

I've tried to put my C5 on a U-aul trailer but it was scraping the rubber spoiler for the first 3 feet. Then I noticed that the angle of the ramp to the trailer was too steep. Get a "real" trailer.

Tried to rent a U-Haul car trailer for my Porsche Boxster. Drove it slowly up the ramps, was able to get it almost to the front. But the area you are to drop down with your front wheels and tie down, the spoiler would then hit. I backed off and took it back. Can not even imagine this working with the length of the nose and height of the spoiler on the Corvette comparing it to my Porsche which did not have the length up front or spoiler so low.
