Re: code C1283 C help !

Hi there ,

I have c5 year 2000 manual transmission,
i have this code (C1283 C Excessive Time to Center Steering) and couse this msg (Active handling warming up) also the active handling light turns on. also gives another msg (Service vehicle soon), so if any one know how to fix this problem i`ll appreciate that.

I know, I know...old threat...but I am having this issue now...did you have a chance to resolve this? If so, what did you have to end up doing?

This is almost always caused by a malfunctioning steering wheel position sensor. And in rarer instances a SWPS circuit problem(high resistance etc.) As well as as failing lateral accelerometers or yaw rate sensors(I have never replaced either of these but they can cause this code) The most important thing to check is your alignment(all 4 wheels) and if this code only came on the day you were at the track and started up the car and immediately went into a smokey burnout followed by a nice long tail out drift then you pro'ly dont have a failure at all. The EBCM checks for steering wheel centering when you first drive the vehicle relatively straight and slowly for 10 seconds, if this never happens you can get a false C1283.

There isnt really much you can do with a SWPS sensor except replace it. I think they run about $80 and can take up to 2 hours to replace. You need to remove the steering cloumn from the car.

Like I said Ive never had to replace any LA or YR sensors so I have little info off the top of my head for you , EBCM's run near a grand I believe, if you have any further specific questions feel free to PM me.
