O2 in the primary or collector - what say you?

Can you guys give me your best argument for why you can or can't install the O2 sensors in a primary tube (one on each side) vs. the collector?????

I have always heard that putting them in the collector from the 10 - 2 o'clock postion is best....and have always done that.

However, that is tricky to do with twin sensors (right & left bank) - and I don't know if it has to be done.

Here is a picture of the type of headers I'm running - just to give you a better idea. If put in the primary, it would be in a staight section half way betweent he collector and header flange.

So...give me your best educated guess

12 is the only position in this application (unless you want to carve out the frame rail as some have done) - this is how we did it last time.

However, running two of them it would be nice to tuck them in the engine bay.

I'd like to know the science behind the collector vs. one tube

Have you considered running open loop?
No, not an option for what I'm doing. We are looking at getting the full advantage of the system including the dbw throttle, cruise...etc. etc.

I'm sure I'll be back to putting it in the collector - just still not convinced for sure..

The argument of averaging the output across four makes sense - I like that thought process.

I'm sure somebody has done it this way for one reason or another - I have always put them in the collector. The early OBD I systems didn't matter - this I know. Aftermarket EFI can go in a primary - as long as you stay away from the bend and don't put it below the 10 or 2 position.

After much consideration, I opted for the collector. My brother-in-law was in town for turkey day and helped me set up and measure to get the bungs in straight. I don't mind the look of the O2 on the outside - it is actually a great conversation piece...and per our discussion here - a necessity based on how things are set up.

I'll post pics later.

I have a set of STS spiral baffles on the way - but running it through regular hooker inserts at the moment.
